Mahindra Pickup Update

I think Ford might bring back an F100 with a super economic engine. By the sounds of their recent news about engine production, they are nearly matching diesel HP, torque, and mpg with their improved gas engines now (or soon). These will be less costly to produce and maintain than diesels so their Eco engines will be "the new diesel". The 2011 F150's will have smaller engines producing more HP and better MPG.

Ford (and the others) cant grasp that many dont WANT a full size (or slightly cut down full size F100) truck.

Even toyota and the imports have "embiggened" their trucks. WHY? i like my Compact Tacoma. Its great in the woods, easy around town, plus i can carry a full sheet of plywood.Tow my trailer, carry my atv, What more do I need?

If i could get the Euro Hilux with the diesel, id be all over it. New Taco does nothing for me.

even considering its advanced age, ranger is still a seller. Power company likes them for reading meters, auto parts stores for delivering parts etc.

Transit connect has been here for a bit and im starting to see more of them. Courriers seem to be the first adopters.

Ford might be to force current ranger users into the TC? dont know

The first company to bring a compact diesel back to NA will have a winner on their hands.

There are lots of companies with them besides the ones mentioned.

I even went as far as emailing VW expressing interest.Got the standard "no plans" reply:mad:

Actually I don't think the F100 will make it, but a new "world" Ranger under some unknown name probably will. I was interested in a small diesel engine truck until recently. My lawn mower is diesel too, so I know the advantages. But what I've been reading on the new small, efficient, powerful gas engines has changed my mind. The next couple years will be interesting.

QFT!

Love the Hilux.

I like the convertible beds. Huge in austrailia but not here? wonder why? I think it has to do with the fact that Cab and chassis is as expensive as the truck with the box:mad:

My trailer i built has convertible sides and i wouldnt have one without it.

Now if were talking dream vehicles, mine is a Ausie Landcruser diesel with a convertible bed.

Funny thing is i was bidding on a ex-mining LC with coinvert bed and it ended up selling for almost 4k:laughing: Thing was BEAT... even had the roof cut off so that it could fit better underground.... Shows how much people want them.

AMEN brother...

My wife has an '04 Tacoma before they made them larger, and has no interest in the newer ones. Why drive a 3/4 size truck with a V6 to get Full Size V8 economy (or lack of mileage).

If you look at the REAL MARKET for the Ranger, it is severely limited in numbers compared to the F-150 line.

Launching a vehicle is about the ability to sell it at a profit. The lower the production volumes, the harder it is to pay down the development costs. This is why limited production vehicles are EXPENSIVE, R&D and certifications are EXPENSIVE and there are few units to spread those costs over.

Yes, the Ranger is available in (almost all) other countries in diesel varients and they sell well. However, those models are NOT certified for US crash or emissions standards and getting that done costs a LOT more than we think.

If Ford sells 20K more F-150s by moving Ranger buyers into that line, it's a HUGE win for Ford. I could see an F-100 diesel at a premium price but they have no "small" diesel suitable for the F-1xx platform that is EPA certified right now and none in the pipeline. With advanced gasoline combustion technologies, there really is no need.

I don't understand what that new truck will have to offer compared to the current trucks out there. When you read that article, and the comments below it, it sure sounds like they have lost their target customers. $22,000 for a base model? I can buy a new Ranger for $16,000 (price on the window), that gets 27mpg right now. I can get it serviced anywhere, and it is no doubt safer than a new India made truck. Gas costs less than deisel so the milage difference is a wash. Does anyone care to guess how a vehicle designed for India will handle road salt here? ;)

I just saw a Transit van in DC. Are they being sold here now?

A little late, but I live 30 minutes out of DC, and the dealer has had them for about a year, and there's about 25 in stock now.

I was just looking for a truck for my nephew. At one of our local dealers you can get a new F-150, 4.6L V8, XLT STX package in 4x4 for $24,600.

Andy Mohr

You can get a F-150 V8 XL package 2 wheel drive for $17,500.

Andy Mohr

He has tons of F-150s that would compete with that Mahindra price.

Ford has been on a roll lately.. But this is a bonehead move.

Ford could keep the ranger. Install a small euro (clean) diesel and sell every one they make.

The south american Ranger is a nice little truck, with the diesel that would sell like hotcakes.

Made in Brasil so it'll be cheap on the lots here....Why cant we get it? Oh right.. the protectionist chicken tax:mad:

(yes i know im canadian, so we technically could get it, but ford wont bring it to canada if it cant be sold in the states so the chicken tax effects me too)

I just talked to my buddy that works for Caterpiller. He's going to Brazil next week to train some the engineers there. One of the engineers from Brazil wants him to buy a laptop computer and take it to Brazil for him. The computer can be bought in the US for $400. The same computer costs $1200 in Brazil because of their protectionist chicken tax!

I dont know of any laptops that are US made off the top of my head (maybe dell has one or 2 ) All i ever come across are asian made. So i doubt thats the "chicken tax" at work

The price of the laptop there is likely due to local taxes, currency exchange, etc.

Never said it was US made. Guy in Brazil wanted to buy a laptop that was for sale in the US. Due to Brazil's extremely high import duty (chicken tax as you call it) the laptop would have cost triple what it costs in the US. The guy in Brazil asked my buddy to get the laptop because of the high import duty.

Toyota could just sell the Hi-Lux light pickup in the USA, with the 3 liter D4D engine known from the landcruiser. It will tow 5k lbs and with that diesel, be powerful and economical and prove a selling point over the 2.2 liter Mahindra. Toyota could also sell their 2.2 liter D4D downrated for commercial use at 150 hp.

Ford could throw the 2.7 V6 diesel in the Ranger, which they have built at PSA (Peugeot and Citroen) in France, and finds its way into Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, Jaguar and Landrover.

GM could take the Isuzu 3 liter diesel, or take the 3 liter engine of the Iveco Daily of their sister company Fiat.

Nissan could take the 3 liter diesel from the Patrol 4x4 for N.A. trucks

Dodge isnt tied up with Merc as they used to be, but they can use the V6 in the same configuration as used in the Sprinter in their pu trucks.

All major players in the market have a small Diesel in house, or just next door.

I bought about 300 Diesel rangers with 4 doors and a/c here in the middle east for abot 10K each. They were cheaper to operate (especially parts price) than Gators and held up fine. Also bought plenty of diesel Datsuns and Toyotas and put a million kilometers on them with minor maintenance. Our industry doesn't like economical 4 wheel methusalas on the road. They want us to replace every few years. I always wondered why you can't get a cheap diesel in a 19 foot boat to putt around with.
