Making a barn out of shipping containers. Any ideas?

Next door property has the same barn designed with semi trailers form World War II. New zoning lady wanted it torn down because she could not find a permit. Gave another neighbor a letter that his farm equipment needed painted as it was rusting. My taxes wasted in hiring this person. She lasted a year and her funding dried up.

Don't some people just plain suck!

I should mention, 16' ceiling in the center and I built a 14 x 20' mezzanine in the back half with staircase, 7' ceiling height up there, and 8' of clearance underneath it to the joists.

Also, i get alot of storage on the roofs of the containers between the trusses.

How did you attach the bottom plates to the containers, through bolted?

Yes basically. I had to flush up the top sides of the containers with 6''x6'' pieces of 3/4'' and 1/2'' plywood, gluing then down with construction adhesive, then through bolted 2x6s as my sill plates for the trusses to rest on.

That was about the most non-conventional aspect about incorporating these containers as part of a building structure aside of aquiring approval for a permit. The rest went pretty smooth construction wise that I can think of.

Also, I used steel I beams with post footings to rest the center walls on.

Daggone it, should've bought a container back when my organization was almost giving them away!

Bought a pair of "one-trip" 20'ers for temp storage after a microburst took out our old barn/loafing shed.

Soon they'll be placed under a shed roof attached to the new barn (actually garage/shop) that's currently under construction. This way they remain 'portable' structures exempt from building codes, and the max sq ft building size limits imposed on our property since it's part of a wildlife conservation area.

Once the project is a bit beyond holes in the ground containing poured footers I'll post some construction pics.

I got a call from the transporter this morning, the 40' should be here Thursday morning.

Those look new! Real nice.

I regret that I didnt spray the walls inside of my containers with white gloss enamel paint when I first got them. Makes them brighter inside plus a real nice clean look.
