Making a pasture

I just recently had acreage cleared of mequite by bulldozer. Where the contractor could root plow there is no major resprouting, but where he could not there is. I need to know if shredding will keep this at bay. The fields are too torn up to run a shredder on now so I am also looking for suggestions on how to level out the fields. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

We did some spot application of Remedy and diesel but that cannot be used in a large sprayer operation because it will kill all of the grass. Or so I have been told. Does Tardon22 work better than remedy?

Growing up in South Texas, I learned that there is little you can do to stop a determined mesquite from growing. Remedy and Tordon will make it real sick but the chemical solution is generally the most expensive route.

How many acres are you talking about? If the ground is reasonably soft you can probably make a drag with some 6" posts and fencing panels. Your best bet though, is to disc it and then drag it (or even better, find someone with a land plane). The key to dealing with mesquite is to keep them mowed or cut down. Eventually they'll quit bothering you.....

agreed that mechanical removal is the best ....but ....man -o -man that's a whole lot of hard work -- I'll pay the $200 for the chemical and save the $300 dr. bill and skip the pain and suffering. Agree also that it can only be controlled - never eradicated. Even if you come close to getting it all - seems they get replanted by birds or whatever.

I have had more new growth Mesquite this year for some reason I cannot explain. I have had good success spot spraying small growth plants with Round-up brush killer.
I was spraying atleast once a week all over my little place and finding new plants every week.
