I was talking to my dad and he said the guy years ago that made his Hydraulic lines just had some dies and a 20 ton press to crimp them. He said he never had a problem. Any seen this or where you can buy the dies. I bought him an old ford backhoe and it's going to need all the lines.

I don't think a universal die set would crimp all the various hoses and fittings available today.

Most all the manufactures say to only use their hoses and crimpers for quality work.

I have had a hoses push off the crimp. It was made up by a hyd service guy.

a press would work, IF you had the correct collets & dies for the fittings & hose.

You can press off Caterpillars hose fittings and repress them ontolines with a regular press if needed. On the servicetruck I often keep make up fittings that screw on to hoses without a press.

they do make crimpers with micrometer settings and catalogues with conversion factors for different hoses and fittings. however unless your going into the hose business jj's suggestion of using a manufacturers parts and crimpers is good advice. the old guys use to set up the old fittings in their dies measure the height of the stack and then make up the new hose with a press and those measurements. they were also using lower pressures back then. nowadays shops have to be mindful of what they are making (insurance claims and all). reuseables are a good alternative to not having a press and dies and can be cheaper and handier in the long run.

I use the Gates PC707 (I have two).....Power Crimp 707 hydraulic hose crimper | Gates Corporation

this crimper is adaptable for all types of fittings with the digital/micrometer settings on the side switch that can be tweeked to crimp anything as long as I have the proper crimp dia specs.....Not as user friendly but does more work and can reproduce any brand hose crimp

That said, most hose manufaturers make crimp machines with the dies to match a peticular size hose......for the proper crimp you need a set of dies to match whatever hose/fittings you want, the dies just squeeze and bottom out for a full crimp........that's where the press comes into play, if you have the proper dies to match the hose/fittings then all you need to do is press them all the way bottomed out in the press cone.....DONE

The press setup in the video is OK assuming you only use weatherhead hose/fittings with matching dies

a friend of mine uses that rig and it works well for him. gates hoses are an old company and their hoses have a good flexibility. flexdraulics is also a good product and is geared towards agriculture.

I purchased a Hosecomatic hyd kit with fewer parts several years ago. I don't know that I will be making up hose assembly's based on some comments about tolerances and so forth.

Anybody use these manual hyd kits?

Hosecomatic® Hydraulic Hose Repair Kit - Spaldings

It appears that if you use the stated hose and their fittings, and use the beading tool and use some good calipers, you might get some good tight hose assembly.

What would you hose guys do when a customer brings in a hose and just wants a fitting replaced, do you make an educated guess about the crimp, and will you guarantee the repair.

The setup in the video uses Weatherhead Coll-O-Crimp tolling. This only works if you are using Weatherhead hose and fittings, or 100% interchangeable components. Also note, Weatherhead makes multiple lines of hoses and fittings, and the tooling shown will crimp some of them, but not all of them.

If you want a flexible hose crimping system that will crimp a variety of hoses and fittings, we have a portable hose crimper for less than $1200 plus dies ($175 each) and is powered by your own 10,000 hydraulic pump.

You can also purchase the crimper with a manual pump or pneumatic (air over hydraulic) pump for a bit more. Our full line of crimpers (and a useful video) can be viewed at the link below"

The odds are if it needs a new end on an old hose then a new hose will be quoted....

If by chance the hose looks new and it is the same brand I carry, then I'll put on a new end with no guaranty....

If I make a new hose with new ends using factory crimp specs then that covers me as far as liability when selling my finished product.....

It all boils down to whether or not you are doing it for profit ($$) or for saving money on your own equipment......two different senarios

Our local Fleet Farm has a large selection of pre-made hoses. The few that wouldn't be a fit the local hydraulic shop can put together reasonably.

I usually end up just buying the premade at tractor supply. I like the reuseable fittings but they are so expensive each. I tried pricing out some hoses from sponsors online but it doesn't see worth the price and have to wait.

How does that work..??

How long does it take to make a hose..??

The crimp maker looks like a pipe cutter with a rounded wheel, and it compresses a ring around the hose. You turn the ring maker until it meets the stated size.

What that pipe roller does, is to roll some crimping beads around the sleeve.

You have to use a micrometer to get it right, and you have to use a specific hose.

Hosecomatic® fittings are approved for use with SAE 100R1 AT medium pressure hose and SAE 100R2 AT high pressure hose, with a range of BSP and JIC fittings available to cover over 80% of hoses in use

With hydraulic hoses, we try not to make guesses (educated or otherwise) about the crimp specifications. Saving a handful of dollars on a single hose assembly isn't worth the thousands in liability, the possibility of serious injury, or worse....

We usually steer away from putting new fittings on an old hose, but under some circumstances, we may do so if the hose is in good condition and is one that we made ourselves or one that we know meets the same SAE specifications as our own hoses.

Ken,

Let me ask you this about the reusable fittings.

Are we talking here about a specific hose or a general range of hoses, as in SAE 100R2AT Hydraulic Hose from any manufacturer other than name brands.

How secure and confident can a non professional use the reusable fittings for pressure up to 3500 psi? Do you all have a disclaimer for the reusable fittings, such as use at your own risk?

/ Making hoses with regular press #19
they are generally a proprietary set up. not made to be used with other mfg. product. you do raise a good point though about liability. i figure its the same as the porta-crimpers they are a system in themselves and are used by a lot of non professional people.

/ Making hoses with regular press #20
JJ,

The only disclaimer we post on the reusable hose ends is that the fittings for SAE 100R2AT hose can ONLY be used with SAE 100R2AT hose. We don't specify manufacturer, just that the hose needs to meet all requirements for the proper SAE specification.
