Making money with land

that's still about $4000 per year for the trees; plus site prep, fertilizer, stakes and support system, spray material... Also some type of deer fence is almost a must if you want the trees to survive.

I'm trying to start a part time venture on a 2 1/2 acre field I just had reclaimed; next year I'll plant about 3000 strawberries, plus as many asparagus roots... in 2016 hopefully I'll also be adding the dwarf fruit trees. My goal is to have 1 acre of fruit trees, 1/2 acre asparagus and 1/2 acre of strawberries for retirement income when I turn 60 in 2019.

I've always been interested in growing "Asparagus" for profit. Can you tell me if a good profit can be made growing asparagus ? And how much would need to be planted
to achieve this goal ?
Thank you,
duke

NHMitch, That post of yours is what I have been trying to get at on this thread - apologies to the few others who have posted similarly and not been named. It can be done, but it has to be your sole purpose in life. It can be done on a part-time basis too (keeping the day job) and you have to have the right woman with you.

OP, Even if you are just thinking of supplementing the day job income, you need to go at it professionally. Think that, without prior warning, you have to live off the 4 acres.

A few people have mentioned hens for eggs. Eggs have been my main source of income on a few occasions. It is a lot of work if you have more than a hundred or so, but always profitable if you sell good quality eggs -and many people do not. Full details are in my book (That is for serious people not just the mildly curious. Do not buy anything unless you think you might regain the cost) but a hen will eat roughly just over 2lbs of feed per week. Allow two and a half pounds for waste. Buy egg-laying hybrids. Calculate your cost of feed against your selling price of eggs. On fairly rough going ie real free range as most folks on TBN understand it, a hen might not produce more than 18 dozen eggs in its first year. Sell them to non commercial people after that for a very small sum and they will keep coming back year after year. You also have capital costs and you need to factor in that, but I have always found hens to show a reasonable return.

I AGREE FARMING ESPECIALLY ON THE SMALL SIDE YOU'LL BREAK EVEN ..I DO IT FOR A LIVING DURING THE SEASONAL GROWING SEASON AND YOU DO BREAK EVEN. I BELIEVE THAT THE ORGANIC FARMING IS THE NEW CITYFIED KIND OF FARMING THATS CAUSING MORE ECOLI OUTBREAKS THAN IT USE TO BE. IF YOU DON'T KILL THE BUGS AND DISEASES WITH COMMON SENSE MEASURES YOU'LL GO HUNGRY. JUST THE COST OF STARTING OFF IF THE LAST TIME YOU GOT ANY INCOME CAME FROM THE LAST FROST AND YOU DON'T HAVE A GREENHOUSE, STARTUP COSTS OF SEED AND FERTILIZER WILL BE TOUGH--BUT A COUNTRYBOY CAN SURVIVE.
THE MAIN THING IS ENJOY YOURSELF AND IT'S BOUNTY BECAUSE YOU HAVE GROWN IT YOURSELF AND IT TASTES SOO GOOD!

Actually organic farming is the old way of farming. It was all done that way until folks from the city had to figure out what to do with leftover munitions from WWII.

You may believe that organic farming is causing most of the E. Coli outbreaks, and you are entitled to believe what you like, but I believe quite strongly that you are full of baloney.

When I think of the water that is used to wash greens, I think of E. Coli...or how about the water that is sprayed on produce in the produce case? I realize produce keeps better when it is kept moist but the water is indeed a factor. I'm sure some people just take greens out of the plastic wrapper and eat it.

Advice on growing Hay for Profit

I have a dream as I near retirement to obtain 30 ac. of land with 10 ac. being rolling meadows or pasture here in central Pennsylvania. My thought is to grow and harvest hay (or other field crops) on the 10 ac. and sell it to nearby beef/horse farms. My challenge is I know nothing about raising Hay. I mean nothing. That's why I need your advice and counsel for Dummies. I would do this mostly because I believe I would enjoy it. Selling the hay would be to help defray costs for my dream. I see this dream with something like a JD 3033R with attachments. I would possibly pay or hire someone to harvest the hay because of the capital outlay required.

Please give me you seasoned advice on my dream.

John

E. Coli 0157H7 comes from fecal matter. Not water. Also, not washing your vegetables is a bad idea no matter where they came from, unless you grew them yourself.

ACTUALLY WHEN I WAS YOUNG THE FERTILIZER WAS STRONGER AND THE INSECTICIDES WE'RE POWERFUL. THE 10-10-10 CALLED GEANURE BACK THEN SMELLED STRONGER AND GREW ESPECIALLY BETTER CORN. NOW THE REGUALAR 10-10-10 IS LOADED WITH FILLER AND LIME COMBO AND IS WEAKER. NOW I DO USE MANURE AND COMPOST FOR VINE CROPS MIXED WITH A LITTLE FERTILIZER TO GROW A GOOD CROP. WHAT HAS HAPPENED IS FERTILIZER AND FUNGICIDE ARE BEING CONTROLLED BY THE ENVIRO-WHACKO'S AND OBAMMER TYPE EPA EXTREMEST.
SEEMS LIKE TO ME AS A FULL TIME FARMER OF 50 YEARS THAT THE ORGANIC HOAX IS MOSTLY STARTED BY YANKEE CITY FOLKS WITH SCARE TACTICS. I GUESS IF YOU USE SPRAYS AND GRANULER FERTILIZERS WITH COMMON SENSE LIKE OUR PARENTS DID YOU WON'T GET A BUG IN YOU'RE BALONEY SANDWICH--BY THE WAY WE COUNTRYFOLK LOVE BALONEY SANDWICH'S WITH TOMATO'S ON TOP--LORD HAVE MERCY!!

Please stop hollering... we can understand you just fine.

Email Etiquette Tip - DON'T SHOUT!
If you USE ALL CAPS in your email or message board posts, you will immediately make yourself seem inexperienced or ignorant. Most experienced computer users consider the use of all capital letters to be the Internet equivalent of shouting.

For those of us who spend a lot of time hanging out in cyberspace, messages written in all capital letters are reminiscent of trying to hold a conversation in which one person is shouting every word while others are speaking at a normal volume
