I'm not interested in offering any opinions on this subject, but I can remember using Sevin dust as well as DDT. Used to get a face full of dust every time we scooped our homemade shaker (tobacco can with nail holes in bottom) into the 50# bag.
Sorry this is a little off topic, but thanks for the memory. Ah, the good old days!

Ditto...but in between the DDT and Sevin was chlordane...it worked on most insects (especially subterranean termites) without the horrible effects of DDT...

Neither. Despite knowing that the odds were stacked against me, all I wanted to do was farm. Ever since I could read, about 65 years now, I have spent most of my leisure time reading agricultural books old and new from around the world. You can guess I have read a lot. My post #46 was to draw attention to the fact that several people in my lifetime have become celebrities for their supposed farming, occasionally gardening, achievements, when in fact, they are celebrities because of their published works, courses, and speaking engagements. In other words the bulk of their income does not come from farming. To suggest that it does merely misleads people like the OP into thinking that they too can "Make money with land".

Joel Salatin, like John Seymour before him, is basically a writer. There are others, look at book lists like AcresUSA and see how many these other people publish. How much time do they have to farm if they do so much writing? Both Salatin and Seymour have/had a background in journalism. Both exploited their experience and sold many books. No harm in that, and good luck to them for making so much money from it. Nothing that either of them did/do on their land was invented by them. It has all been done before. In fact Seymour did very little of what he led people to believe from his major work, The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency. He had limited farming experience when he wrote it. He had previously published other books, with, of course, even less experience. But he had his contacts. Most important. Again, good luck to them for being able to make money from showing other people how to do it.

Have a look again at the Polyface site and go to "Speaking Protocol". There is no mention of how much Joel charges, and I saw somewhere recently where he spends over 100 days a year speaking, but it will be way more than Daniel, his son, who is on at $2,000 a shot plus expenses, and his daughter-in-law Sheri is available as a speaker at $1,000 a go plus expenses.

Obviously I now use the internet extensively, and on a small scale find that places like India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Ethiopia and Morocco can frequently provide useful information, although for modern research information it is hard to beat several US State Universities. For example I rely on UC Davis for Almond information, including the site The Almond Doctor. Keep reading.

Salatin's farm is relatively close to the DC area, one of the highest income areas in the country. You really do need a market like that to make it work. When I talked to folks at the A2 market that were driving over 2 hours each way to sell at that market, that told me something - they didn't have a closer market!
