can one convert a manual hydraulic piston (like a bottle jack)to one operated using the tractor hydraulic system? Would you even want to do that? just a thought

The bottle jack contains a reservoir, pump, single acting cylinder, a pump power device (handle), and a dump valve. I think it's a complete system all by itself. If I needed something similar to power with the tractor, I believe a single-acting cylinder would be my choice. It's so much easier to rig than trying to rig a bottle jack for the same purpose.

My 2 cents worth... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You can get modular jack setups that have the manual pump and resevoir separated from the cylinder, connected by hose. These sets usually include some nice bases and tops for the hydraulic cylinder which make it convenient to setup for jacking. I would imagine you could easliy adapt the hose connections of one of these to a tractor quick-connect.

It could be done but...

You would have to remove both the manual pump including it's internals and the 'dump' valve and internals and then somehow connect hydralic hoses to those dinky little fittings.

jhb,
Do you have too much time on your hands or what? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Time is one thing I don;t have! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No, was just thinking, and seeing if I could get the creative juices flowing. I have seen so many inexpensive tools like wood splitters with manual hydraulic jacks that I thought it might be an interesting option.

I guess the answer is "why would you want to".

bottle jacks are freebies a lot of times. I am looking to adapt one for a top link. that is how I stumbled on the thread. and you can get one that is fairly short/compact to boot.

It won’t work because a bottle jack is a single way cylinder. Second hand hydraulic cylinders are cheap. Just use one of those.

You can use a single way cylinder on a tractor. They were used for many years on loaders. All you have to do is look up to one quick disconnect

I was referring to the post of making a top link and I stick to my original statement that it won’t work. I should have quoted but I didn’t see the post in between or we posted at the same time.

I think most jacks, like hydraulic presses, with their own hand pump are operating at much higher pressures than any tractor's hydraulic system. Around 10,000 psi

Check that fact before doing a lot of work and then finding you have a limp link.
