I have an old (circa 1970's) JD model 34 manure spreader. I am currently replacing the conveyor chain and slats due to the great deal of rust on the old broken one. I can't quite figure out if the conveyor is supposed to go over the wheel axle or under. Neither one really looks right but I seem to remember that over is correct. Anyone know for sure?

I know its a little late but can't you go on line and see the manual or call JD?

I've only used the New Holland from that vintage. Seems to me, they go under the axle. I can remember the chains hanging down with quite a bit of slack. I don't think they would do that if they were over the axle.

I have an old spreader made by New Idea, and there are guides that hang down from the frame that the conveyor rides on. The guides are about a foot in front of the axle. This guy has lots of parts for old manure spreaders:

If you look at the second exploded parts diagram down on that page, you'll see a part next to the conveyor that I think is labeled L/307. That looks like the guide I'm talking about.
