Maple Syrup 'hobby' Production

How much syrup do I need to buy to ger the Willys pickup thrown in? NICE truck.

I love those, I had one when I was 18, Willys Overland, the thing being tall and narrow would go places other 4x4 couldn't dream of in the woods.

Mine was mongruled from several different year trucks, my buddies called it the Walton wagon :laughing:, was not a show piece but a daily off roader. It had the most insane low gear, I'd park at the base of the steepest incline and let the clutch out in low 1st and just let the truck idle up the hill.

Split windshield and vacuum wipers with the hand lever inside to supplement when the vacuum was low.

I have no known pictures of that truck unfortunately, but I still bump into people that remember a ride over a mountain trail in it.

Wouldn't mind restoring one someday, haven't seen any sitting around lately though.

Split windshield, vacuum wipers... must have been a late '50s chassis? My father bought a new 62 that he ran until 75; had the 6 cylThunderbolt engine and a steering wheel as big as a trash can cover.

Just getting started in this "hobby" so I won't be selling any. The wife thinks all of my hobbys are expensive, but she loves the maple syrup and she would never let me part with "her" truck.

Just a brief memory . Growing up my father had a perchance for learning to live off the land. From making his own greenhouse , tripod pipe Smasher to drive pipe for a well for said greenhouse ( faucet was right there ) raising bees ,chickens ,all in a very tight suburban neighborhood. Later he bought 9 acres in NE mass had horses and firewood. Then came maple sugaring. Plenty of maples. All red. 300-400 gallons if sap for barely a pint it seemed. A little smoky but good.

Jstpassn, buy your supplies from a sugar shack. I went to the Bacon farm in Sidney and found taps for .25 each, and "Y's" for .43 each. I have paid [in the past] nearly $1 each for taps, won't make that mistake again.

I usually tap trees with the biggest crown and directly under the first large limb.
Now I'm using canning jars for syrup since I've been buying them at yard sales during the summer cheap. [$2 a dozen]

I buy all my supplies from the Bacons also. Very nice family, very knowledgable and will share it, and their prices are very reasonable. Just tapped our trees today. Awesome seeing that sap running in the tubing. Makes it worth all the effort. Hopefully we can get a few more laterals cleared out and run this weekend. Running out of time. We're up in the mountains so it hasn't really warmed up enough yet.

It hasn't started running here yet. I hope it at least holds off until next Thursday, just on principle.
