A few black gum leaves just starting to turn red in my area and some dogwoods are also just starting to turn. I think the heat and dry periods this summer is going to cause the leaves to drop early, I noticed a small collection of misc. leaves along the gutter on the front of the house yesterday AM, had to do a double take.

No thoughts of it here yet. Still picking tomatoes in 90+ degree temps. Cooling down to the 70's this weekend, but that won't phase me yet. Still got a lot of work to do before the snow flies and most of it has nothing to do with preparing for winter:laughing:

Good evening all.Just finished moving 30 yards of gravel[one of the pre winter chores].Been a long time since I needed headlights to finish a job.I do need to add more lights for sure, think I'll put em on the ROPS,loader arms deflect way too much.Near 90 here today but it won't last much longer. You know "make hay while the sun shines".I'll still have "job security" as there is still plenty to do:laughing:Have a good evening,I'll be heading to dreamland soon as it will be a busy day tomorow again.Dave

What do you guy's need to finish before the cold sets in?
I've spent the last couple of weeks getting more work done on the barn, cleaning up the mess inside, sorting out and organizing building materials, etc. ..... and making some space to work. I got additional skirt boards cut for two walls, need to get the rest cut for the other two walls and get them installed so I can backfill and close off the perimeter.

The last week has been spent clearing trees away from the north and south sides of the barn, where the trees were within 15' of the building ..... I'm cutting them back to have a 40' to 60' (mostly) clear space.

I've probably taken down somewhere between 25 and 30 trees so far .... mostly green ash, maple, and poplar (bigtooth aspen) ... some of them were 60' to 70' (or more) tall .....

The ash and maple, being fairly small (3" to 10" diameter) are being cut up for firewood .... I chunked the poplar into 10' to 20' logs and hauled them to the back of the property .... wish I had a bandsaw mill, since the diameters on the poplars are mostly in the 12" to 18" range, and I could get some lumber out of them.

I started out taking out the trees using my bucket and toothbar .... and then I threw the pallet forks on to move some stuff around ..... and I just left them on and used them to dig around the trees and bust loose some of the roots making it easier to push them over ..... it's worked pretty good - plus I started cutting the maple and ash into 10' to 12' logs and used the forks to move them up to the shop where they will be cut, stacked, and eventually burned (saves having to collect up the cut wood from all over the place)

I haven't been able to push over all the trees and pop the stumps with rootballs intact (75% successful), so later today I'll have to put the backhoe on ..... after I take the right front tire up to the shop and get a tube put in it :mur:

After I finish up the tree removal in the next day or so, I have to grade around the building for surface runoff, and decide what I'm going to do with the bare soil (..... gravel, grass, ....... or ??? :confused2:)

At some point before the weather turns bad, I also need to finish the exterior drainage (surface drains, gutter downspouts, and french drains)

I almost hate to stop at this point - I'm on a roll and the weather is cooperating (no rain ) .... but taking the time off work sure puts a hurt on the hip pocket. :(

Dave,

I know exactly what you mean...here south of the mason dixon line we are still in the 90's so it is still a little too hot and humid for me to finish splitting all the wood. I also have some tree limbs downed from a storm that I have pulled into the woods and they need to be cut up and burned but we can't burn here until after Oct 1 , so the way it usually works is the temperature stays so hot and then it seems to just go straight to cold ..so I usually end up finishing much of my to do list in the colder weather. We have not had many Indian summers lately ..just goes from hot to cold...:)

A few soft maples have turned red lately. This hot spell is nuts, 92* at noon. I am wondering if I should bring my pumpkins and squash in out of the heat, but by the time I make up my mind it will have cooled off. The vines are pretty much dead looking for most of them.

I look forward to Fall for chainsaw work. Always a more than a few trees to get rid of. I have plenty of firewood for this winter and next, maybe I will sell some firewood next year. Stack up a couple cords in 4' bolts and let them dry for a season or two.

Today I am cooking down tomato sauce. I will freeze it to use later for pizza or spagetti sauce or tomato soup.

I need a couple loads of gravel too, to even out the driveway here and there to be ready to use the new snowblower this Winter. Have to put a work light on the back of the tractor so I can see the snowblower. :)
Dave.
