Marvel Mystery Oil

CTyler:

Years ago, I had a 350 chevy 4 bolt in a 1 ton truck that I bought used with about 100,000 miles on it. It had a leaky rear main seal so the guy kept adding oil because the rear main seal is kinda hard to change. He must have been using Penzoil or Quaker State a along because when I pulled the valve covers, you couldn't see the lifters or anything else for that matter. It was completely covered in jelly like goo. I replaced the seal and did the kerosene trick on it 3 times, I also had to clean the pickup screen, but I got most of the goo out.

One thing about the goo, if you lose your oil pump, you won't spin a bearing. Plenty of goo for lubrication. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

This stuff is so old that the claims for it belong to another age, another product that is the greatest ever, and of the same time period is Ballistol. Being one of the danged fools who see smaller government as desirable, I don't favor regulation of the claims in the advertising, just "buyer beware".

We used Marvel Mystery Oil for as long as I can remember, I would guess that was about 1940 or so. We used it regilouly in all of the farm tractors. We never had valve or ring problems. We also use it in the cars and trucks. We mixed it with the gas on each fill. I left the farm some time ago, but still use it in my garden tractors and vehicles as well as all of my air tools. Great Product

With reference to the Ballistol. It is great stuff. I use it for lubricating the throwlines I use for tree work..It is biodegradeable and doesn't deteriorate synthetic cordage. It reduces friction and allows a weight bag to return to the ground much more easily than without. Heard about it at a lumberman's festival.

Well, I'll add to this also.

I use Marvel to clean out old engines, always worked well for me. Just used it in a extra loud Briggs, did the trick. It runs with less valve noise. In cars I drop the oil pan and clean out the goo, valve covers too, great time to put on new gaskets.

My grand father uses ATF in the oil , his trucks have 300K + on them. Must not harm them too much. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I try not to get them all gummed up in the first place. But I used walmart and sams oil for years, probably junk oil, I'm learning. Use mobil now.

I'd like to add to Trev's comments. Back in 1975 I bought a new BMW and had problems with rough idle. After a couple of warranty visits, I got a call from the dealer's service manager. He was somewhat embarrased, but explained that Marvel Mystery Oil was the newly approved BMW "fix" for the problem. As I recall, the recipe was to add a can to the gas tank at every fifth fill up to clean the injector nozzles. It worked. However, I would be reluctant to put it in my crankcase.

The gentleman who flys this old bird uses 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil per change. Radial engines have an oil tank and the oil is somewhat "expendable". I saw the fella put about 8 quarts into the tank before heading off to the next stop on the National Air Tour In Tulsa. I spoke to him a bit and he uses the MMO to prevent sticking valves and as a top oil as well. Yep, I would not put it in my new Ford or Toyota or Cadilac, Kubota or JD but I think in a 1930's era radial engine or antique tractor it would be just fine /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. J

TresCrows:

I don't want to start a bunch more pro and con posts, but I use MMO in my 350 Ford Stroker, My 5030 Kubota, the 4010 JD, the 3020 JD, the Honda 400 quad, my wifes '02 Ranger, my Suzuki Sidekick and lastly my lawnmower.

I also use it as a spindle oil in my Bridgeport vertical mill and my Kent 6x18 toolroom grinder. Oh! and all my air tools too. I use an inline drip oiler attached to the air outlet.

In fact, I use so much, I buy it by the gallon. If I could get it in 5's I'd buy it like that.

5030 :I hope you are not using MMO is a powertroke! Say goodbye to some injectors and or sensors. I had a 97 powerstroke and just sold it for a Lexus. One thing you do NOT want to do is add anything to the fuel. The system for the powerstroke is VERY picky and costly if you mess it up.

I would add in anyother diesel but that.

GSXR1100:

I use it in the crankcase, not in the fuel. I use Lucas fuel conditioner in the fuel.
