If you want it to go a little faster you can get oil filter deseigned for filtering fryer oil at a restaurant supply or GFS if you have one near by. The filters are not very expensive. You might even just ask a local restaurant if you can buy one from them. Most Chefs will gladly give you 1. Dave

ANother thing worth mentioning.
The crankcase metal vent tube can crud up and close itself off on a 350. Turns the inside of the block into a sewer system, nasty oil in 500 miles, basically gum up any and all if not detected. Chech that and your PCV valve.

Well this afternoon I drove the truck around the mile (4 miles) to warm the oil up some.Oil pressure still okay.Still no more sticky valves. Pulled her in the driveway, got out the drain pan and drained the Marvel Mystery Oil. Pretty nasty looking for the little run time it was in the engine. I strained it thru an old t-shirt into an empty plastic 5 gallon bucket. Some of the residue was gritty between the fingers but most of it was little chunks of sludge.
I took the Fram filter off and put the new one on. I am letting the old filter drain out overnight tonight and tomorrow I am going to see if I can cut it open with something like maybe my SawzAll. Be interesting to see what the filter caught.
I put 10-30 Castrol in the truck. Started it up and still good normal oil pressure. Might take her for a spin into town tomorrow morning. I am going to keep an eye on the oil and when it starts getting real dirty I will change the oil and filter again.
I did not check the crankcase vent yet (I forgot) but I will do that tomorrow.
All you guys have been real helpful walking me thru my options on this. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gifSo far so good. I will let you know what my findings are when I dissect the oil filter.

Dave:

That's a really good idea and there is a GFS in Monroe, Mi., on Telegraph. I'll stop there on the way home from work.

I wonder if it would strain the metal chips and grit out of the coolant I use in my machine tools. It's a water emulsifiable coolant, Valenite V-700 to be exact. Coolant skimmers are pretty expensive and they don't get the metal out.

The filters are very fine and I would surely think they will filter out very very fine shaveings. The filters are shaped like a cone so you might make a filter base with another cut out buket or weld a little wire one. They do sell SS cone filter baskets but I'm sure you can come up with something that will do. Dave

Dave:

I have to relate a funny story about GFS.

A few years ago, my wife bought some items there and wrote a check. Somehow, she overdrew her checking account (she has overdraft protection now) and the GFS check bounced.

Anyway, the returned check charges amounted to more the $50.00 plus she can't write a check there forever. her total purchase was $15.00 and it cost her $65.00 for her mistake.

The motto of the story is: Don't write a rubber check at GFS. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am surprised that they didn't prosecute her for "uttering and publishing"

You might run into a problem with your flush job. I have had this happen a few times when the customer would bring in some motor flush to use before an oil change. If you washed a lot of sludge loose you might find your pickup screen for your oil pump getting clogged. If all of a sudden your oil pressure drops and your lifters start clattering, shut it off and wait ten minutes. If you start it and the oil pressure comes up and the lifters quiet down and then you lose oil pressure again it'll be time to drop the pan and change the screen. If you have to do that change the oil pump while you're there. On a small block Chevy you want to use a big block oil pump, it fits and it's a high volume unit. It'll give you some extra oil to make up for wear. The reason I only use one quart of ATF in the change oil is that it doesn't knock all the sludge loose at once. Another thing to do if your engine is that nasty would be to pull the rocker covers and check the oil drains in the heads. Around here they're usually so " growed up" that the oil fills the cover until it runs down the pushrod holes.

2 qts of kero in place of oil will do the same thing for sticky valves. 1 qt of atf to 10 gals of diesel fuel works great to quiet sticky diesel injectors, 30 wt liquid silicone (copy machine lube) stops oil burning - silicone burns clear and lubes great but $$$, MMO frees rusted, siezed engines, red-line is the best additive i've ever used for both gas & diesel - Mercedes endorsed it then marketed their own(same stuff). The list of remidies & treatments goes on. If it works use it but i'd follow my owners manual & manufacturers recs for my new vehicles.

Sounds like a Penzoil town.

If the oil drains in the head are pluged up. The old way we use to use is take an old speedometer cable and put it in a drill and drill them out. It is the easiest way I know of. Like I said before, I would put a quart of Rislone in instead of 1 quart of oil to keep it from sludgeing up again, if you don't plan on driveing it a lot. It will also help clean the rest of the sludge out of it. I know I just drive mine to mostly get my mail out of the box, about a 1/5 mile from the house.
