Hi all, I am having trouble finding out how to remove the front pto shaft that runs the hydraulic pump for the loader. Any information appreciated.
I was moving a large log (pushing it up onto the pile) yesterday when the loader stopped working, I thought I sheared a key but nope, broke the shaft! I have the pump off, the spline adapter that goes on the pump with about 4" of shaft. the remainder is still in the tractor. I' been told there may possibly be two ways it comes out, either a left hand thread or splined. Of course the tractor is still up in the woods at a friends. I am hoping to have a better understanding of what I'm up against to get the remainder out. Tractor Joe has this one ( HM1868533 - Front PTO Shaft for Massey Ferguson | TractorJoe.com ) listed but I'm not sure if it's that simple or not.
Hopefully someone here can help me.
Thanks,
Dave

Edit: nevermind, I guess it's not like mine. Yours looks like it has splines on both ends? What loader is on this machine, you may be able to look up the specific loader in the agco parts book.

Is there any bit of the shaft sticking out? If yes, maybe try to cut the shaft off square, weld a nut on it, and use a slide hammer and some heat if splined, or a bit of heat and use a socket on a welded on nut?

Sorry, was on my phone before and it cut out on the app. updated my post.

Edit again: according to tractordata.com, your machine should have come with the MF236 loader. There is an extra small adapter on yours that looks have a set screw (#66), which makes me think maybe yours is splined.

shaeff, thank you. It has a cobbed on allied loader. It's pretty hacked. There is no shaft sticking out in fact it's back in the casting about an inch. I'm trying to figure out how to get the pulley off or at least out of the way if that's what I need to do.
I may jack up the loader and drive it down out of the woods and put it on the trailer and bring it home.
I just went back up to the tractor to take pictures of the vin and of the pulley. I also discovered a grease fitting in the casting (where the shaft goes through) that looks neglected.
Any way that picture can be made bigger? And where did you find it if it's available online? Thank you again.

Well I just had the nearest MF dealer give me the website so I am searching around on it.
IF the shaft is just splined in there how do you think it will work if I drill in the end of it and run a tap in and try to pull it with the tap? Maybe some heat and some grease.

You're very welcome. If you can center a drill bit in it well enough, I'd see if you can tap it out enough to get a piece of threaded rod in there, then see if you can get a slide hammer on that. If yours has the set screw in that extra little piece that attaches to the pulley adapter, make sure you back that screw out first.

That grease fitting is likely for the axle pivot, not the pump shaft. They're often neglected. I take them out and pump grease through them to get them working again, or just replace them. Mine has a fitting on the front and rear of the pivot, so yours might also. If you click the picture or press CTRL and left click, it should enlarge. The website is AGCO Parts Books and if Allied is an AGCO subsidiary, you should be able to search the parts book for it.

I'm hoping you can make some sense of this picture. It doesn't appear to me that there is a set screw or other piece on there. That is the website the local dealer gave me, thanks again.

Yep, I can see it clearly enough. (I JUST went through this on my machine!)

That grease zerk is definitely for the axle pivot. As far as I can tell, you're correct about that other small adapter which means that the pump shaft is likely left hand thread to come out of the crank pulley adapter.

Do you have a picture of it from the front? Yours, like mine, leaves very little space to work in near the crank pulley.

Another thought if you can't get to the end of the broken shaft- if you can wedge it firmly enough that it won't rotate, you could unbolt the (3 or 4?) bolt adapter hub on the crank pulley, heat it a bit around the shaft, and put a strap wrench on it to try to loosen the adapter from the shaft. If successful, you could then fish the shaft out easily with a magnet or poke it out from the inside.

shaeff, I am thinking I'm going to have to bring it home to work on it. If I take my high lift (farm jack) with me and jack the loader up while holding the valve in the up position will it stay up so I can drive down to my trailer?
I don't have any other pictures sorry.

I'm not sure if that'll work, because the pump isn't forcing fluid into the cylinders. You may have to jack it up and chain it in place to keep the loader frame/bucket in the air.

If you had an external way to run the pump for a minute, then operate the loader as normal to lift it up- that may work better. Or just chain it up.

Regardless of what works, when you're repairing it, make sure that the loader arms/bucket are VERY well supported if you work under them. The weight of them dropping on you could cause serious injury or worse!

Thanks for the advice, right now I have two pieces of wood under the loader to hold it up. It is a known leaker downer..lol
When I get it home I'll do the same, or crib it.
Here's the plan as of now, drill the shaft and tap it for a 3/8" bolt, try the slide hammer, if that doesn't work I will put an impact on the bolt and see if I can spin the shaft free. I'm told it's a left handed thread.
Right now I need to find someone to meet me at my friends and give me a ride up to the tractor, it's too far for me to walk and carry the jack and the chains and a chansaw (in case I have to cut a small log to lay across the hood).
