Massey GC1710TLB - getting ready for winter

Anyone ever use a rubber edge when plowing on pavement? Concrete? It's something I decided against when ordering the blade, but wonder if I should have done it.

Just order a strip of a ultra high density polyethylene. It's a plastic with a low friction coefficient and high abrasion rating. Should be safe when plowing and easy to cut and drill holes for mounting.

Can I get away with just chaining up the fronts tires only. I have turf tires using a blower. I have over 1/2 mile of road to clean. The front end just slides with the tilt of the road. I have the back hoe on. Had to use that once to get me out of a pickle of sliding off the road. The front end chained would not be for pulling traction but for steering mainly. Thanks

My advice would be to take off the backhoe.

Yes, you lose some traction, that's true-- but using 4WD, it will most likely still be OK. I still have my original turfs on (now 8 yrs old) and have a pretty good uphill climb coming out of my driveway. There are certain snow/ice conditions when going uphill is a struggle, but it always makes it eventually, and of course coming down is no problem.

Using the blower to clear the way works well; while the backhoe gives tremendous traction on the rears, its weight severely limits traction on the front when going uphill, to the point of having no steering ability at one extreme. I had thought of putting chains on the front, but never did. Removing the BH made life much easier for me. And, although my tires are certainly worn at this point, I've only had to put chains on the rears once, when we had some pretty good ice.

Try it!

I have chains on my rears and had the same issues with loss of steering unless the fronts have gravel or blacktop to grab. Like Walt, I've considered putting chains on the fronts but I fear drivetrain issues due to using the 4wd.

For a couple of years I also had my bh on but going uphill proved treacherous as the hoe was too much weight. I then built a ballast barrel and that was much better at helping me grip without the too much weight. Last year with blowing snow on the gravel road that I maintain when I'm up here, I went through 6 sheer pins in one storm due to the road not freezing yet and scraping up many stones, so I picked up a 5' rear blade at TSC that I use to scrape the snow off the road while using the blower on the blacktop drive. I love it!

This year I built a "box" to fit on the blade to hold my buckets of sand, pole to clean out auger if necessary and two ammo boxes to hold sheer bolts, tools and chains just in case.
I'll post a photo if I can today.

Rather than removing the b/h, has anyone considered adding weight to the front? And, I am not talking the few pounds filling the front tires with fluid add, I am talking, a couple of hundred pounds?

Weight is everything when plowing.

There is a weight rack, on the bottom of the brush guard.

I always plow with the b/h on. And, don't have any issues.

But, I live where it's relatively flat.

My setup and..

Here's what I deal with when the weather leaves a thin coat of snow and ice on a steep drive. I decided to scrape the driveway and the continue on the gravel road. It does well.

Nice setup, pixguy. Looks like you have a beautiful setting there, great pics.

Can you fit a 12 pack in that middle compartment? :licking:
