Maxxforce diesel engines

Apparently they're available in Canada,
Industrial and marine engines, through Scania USA... Thats a different emission certificate. and 15 year old grey import trucks. In the USA thats 25 years before you can import a non EPA approved vehicle.

Edison motors, Chace has verbal incontinentia, he often speaks before he oversees the consequences. He was talking about making a version with the Scania V8 and a Fuller for those who want old school. However there is no Fuller available that can handle the torque (warranty will void) only Scania and Volvo have these.

And if Scania gets an on-road EPA approval for this engine, its Traton brother International will use it first OR Scania itself will sell through International dealers, overshadowing Edison. Nonetheless Scania is hot at it to sell their smaller diesels as generator engines for the diesel electric Edison.

Edison got this idea after another youtuber, Bruce Wilson, got an old beater from Canada, though it sparked his interest and he bought two others, in better condition. Got invited for a factory tour, and now has become an official Scania demonstrator, they built him a truck to tour the USA on a one year EPA allowance, which can be extended with another 3 years.

I just found a 2010 6x6 with long wheelbase in excellent conditions for $26,000. Has everything I want BUT it has a Maxforce diesel (10L @330/1150)
I’m getting to the point where I might not be able to resist……

Any way you can get any maintenance records?
Doubtful.
Anything similar (like a Freightliner) with a Cummins is going to be $ about 75K.
So about $50,000 more.

Have I reached the point where you roll the dice and take a chance on a $25,000 Maxiforce International?
Theres a good chance it won’t break and maybe there’s someone out there with “deleting” knowledge? I know they already offer a “bulletproofed” EGR thats better than factory.

Make a heck of a hay hauler for on/off road use!

That is quite a bit of saving, for sure tempting. How many hours/miles?
One way to look at it is worst case scenario, if it goes **** up what's it going to cost to repair it and will it still be worth it or at least make it cost effective taking into account the inconvenience .
What's an improved EGR or removal worth and maybe plan on a preemptive repair?

Is it something that you can swap another engine into easily and cost effective if you buy it and tge engine pukes in a year?

I think ive said it before, but the MAN D2676 is a fine engine with DEF. Navistar ruined it with EGR. If you can work around that, its a great engine.

That’s the death penalty. There’s no way to swap in a Cummins. All the PCM, computers, wiring plumbing….
I bet it’d be $50,000

You have to stay with the IH engine.

This particular engine is a Maxforce 10 at 330HP, so it’s smaller than the MAN.

I found an aftermarket EGR that’s $3,500. Crazy expensive. Seller told me he just blocks them off with a plate. I figured that would throw a code for EGR and de-rate the motor.

The MaxxForce 10 used to be the DT570 developed on a DT466 base. The same goes with that: IH had a very reliable engine platform but their CEO with no engineering experience was hell bent on "diesel only" meaning EGR to reduce nitrous oxides where Europe adopted DEF already.

Thats exactly the reason that Freighliner and Detroit Diesel are using Mercedes engines, Mack/Volvo the European Volvo engine, Paccar the European Daf engine, and only Cummins (who kept up its DEF experience due to their presence on the European market) kept as an independent American engine manufacturer...

Navistar CEO Dan Ustian riled up the EPA to hold back DEF while his own engineers knew it was physically inevitable.

I have a HT570 in my 7500 4x4. Just did a head on that one. $9,000!!! WTF!!
I figured it was just an HT570 with a DEF system and a more complicated EGR system.

Yeah, but thats why a similar Freightliner with a Cummins is $60,000-$100,000.

They are giving away the Maxforce Internationals.

I was half thinking about putting a dump bed on my Volvo semi. It’s not 6x6 but it meet the other criteria I wanted being automatic and 405 hp. I’ve not seen any other dump trucks that are comparable for less than 40-50k.

Ummmm......that would make me think a bit harder that there's a good reason for it. Not trying to be a downer but.....I'd be nervous as hell. Then again, I'm not one to gamble.

No, you are exactly right. It’s a gamble. These trucks are being sold for next to nothing as a trade-off on Maxforce engine reliability issues.
Kinda funny how you’ll see 2 trucks, nearly identical, the only difference being one is maxforce and the other is pre-maxforce and the older one sells for more $.

….just wonder if the low purchase price could be low enough to allow me to take a chance that I could “bulletproof” the thing, like guys that did it to 6L Ford Powerstrokes?

The rest of the maxforce truck is fine.

So is it just the EGR that goes bad or is there more?
The only actual involvement I had with the failure end of them is like I had said previously, a friend of mine drove one that was on a unique piece of equipment and it was constantly in the shop for leaks and other failures that shut the rig down. Numerous others were always in the shop as well but I never really looked into the problems, I just heard the supervisors constantly cursing and having to revive older trucks that had been mothballed for auction to put them back into service..
Is there a bunch of things that are bad ? I know the EGR leaking was one I remember for sure.

Leaking EGR, failed DPF’s, turbo actuators, etc.
Even the replacement motors have little improvement.
They moved on to Cummins in 2016.

So if I wait a few more years, maybe I’ll be able to afford a Cummins powered version 😂

Sounds like the whole thing is a boat anchor. I stand by my previous assessment on the last rig you were looking at. Walk away....far away. :)
