I’d buy a GM hands down. I’d be inclined to buy a gas burner to save money since you have another truck for heavy towing. Although the Allison behind the duramax might hold up better to plowing. If you’re set on the diesel the duramax is nearly the only option. A Ford 7.3 is too old and way overrated IMO, the 6.0 and 6.4 is junk, and the 6.7 is too new for my taste and probably your budget. Dodge interiors and transmissions suck.

Im all geared up to run diesel (I buy on road and off road in bulk). I have a road tractor, too.

I’m sure people will come on here hating on the IFS on GM trucks but the bottom line is they ride and drive better and hold up to anything that class truck is fit to handle.

I have no problem with IFS.

The DEF/DPF solutions by the big 3 are all equally complex, expensive & problematic. Reasonably reliable most of the time, but painful if they have issues. I'm not a fan, but I like clean air & newer machines. Better comfort & less wrenching most of the time.

The new generation GM trucks are built pretty stout. They updated the frame, suspension and drivetrain in 2011 and I can tell you from experience they can take a lot of abuse plowing snow. My fathers 2011 2500HD (gas) has been pushing a 9' Fisher straight blade. He is very rough on it and it has performed like a champ. Rust is starting to get it though.

My 2012 2500HD has never plowed (doesn't see snow) but it has towed some impressive loads.

There are only two issues with the GM trucks that I know of:
- Cost. You will pay a fortune for a a diesel crew cab short bed. A long bed extended cab may be difficult to find.
- You usually don't find a GM work truck. Most around here are very fancy. Fancy = expensive.

Great info. I appreciate the plowing aspect of what you said.
I have no problem with a 2011-? with some miles on it. Even 100K or more. Doesnt scare me if well cared for. Its going to be used for plowing, lighter loads of hay and everyday empty use here & there.
Agree 3500/diesel/crew/shorty is a tough find. Nobody wants to sell them....

I have a 2016 F350 Powerstroke. I had a NOx sensor in the exhaust go out at 48,000 miles and they replaced it under emissions warranty. Currently I am getting an intermittent wheel speed sensor error code, which is a cable or connector issue in a front hub assy. After it first showed up I jiggled the cable and it went away for almost 2,000 miles, now it is back again. And one time I was changing the rail-mounted fuel filter and the plastic housing cracked while I was trying to get it off. The local parts guy actually said "Yeah, those break all the time." (But the replacement appeared identical to the original, thanks Ford.) Those are the three problems I've had in 5 years.

Scotty Kilmer?
No more 6L or 6.4L for me.
Might try a 6.7 Ford. My Ford diesel tech buddy really likes them.
GM makes excellent drivetrains, body and chassis concern me.
I have storage tanks for diesel so gas is out plus the poor fuel mileage
When on road hits 5 a gallon (and it will and soon), you might change your mind. I'd rather get poor mileage and pay less per gallon myself and not have the T4 final junk to worry about anyway.

My next 1 ton will have the Ford 7.3 gasser in it. Probably a standard trans too. Not all the fond of Ford slush boxes.

Yeah, maybe, but gas wont be far behind, probably 4.00-4.50. I buy bulk on/off road, so I like the convenience of fueling up at the shop. Plus I like diesel much more for towing. New 7.3L gas trucks are 2-3X the cost of what I'm looking at. Maybe I will find an 06-07 LBZ and problem solved on the T-4. ;)

The trick is trying to find a 3500 crew cab shortbed non rusted in a color I like..... not easy. Those trucks are 14 years old now.
