That's why I built a shop. It's easier to keep busy if you can dodge the rain, snow, and blow.
Do you heat the shop and keep humidity in check?

The reason I ask is I have the shop I always wanted in Olympia WA but the humidity takes a toll unlike anything experienced in California... sadly not old car or machine tool friendly...

I am maybe 20 miles south of you and I have no problems in my shop due to moisture. 1800Sf and r-19 walls 30 ceiling and sheetrocked. I only heat it when I am in it.

Pole Barn on slab over gravel with bat insulation...

Often locked up tight for months at a time... no heat.

The leather interior of the only car stored was starting to mildew.

I bought some mildew powder and placed it in a large plastic basin to see if any better...

Last visit August 2021...

No heat, but continuous ridge and eave vents, and OSB under the metal siding. If it's cold, I add more clothes. Machine tools like lathe and drill press are covered with recycled flannel sheets saturated in machine oil. I occasionally use radiant heat during very cold weather. The humidity in the shop stays right around 70% no matter what the weather, so condensation is not a problem.

Maybe lack of OSB is my missing link?

It does get humid in a well forested area...

It's humid in my insulated tin shed also. When the inside temp gets over 55 degrees I plug in the dehumidifier. I have it set at 45% and it stays nice and dry/cool in the warm weather, if I keep the door closed.

Much to learn on my part when it comes to climate variations…

Shop is 1800 square feet with 12’ walls… and partial loft.

Olympia WA tends to be on the wet side especially out Boston Harbor way…

Been taking atorvastatin (10 mg a day) since I was in my 50's.. 64 now and never had an issue with not having energy, or joint pain. It may come later, but for now, I'm good

I think the colder nights are the problem when it comes to rust. When the heavy tools like lathes and mills get into the 40's and then the day warms rapidly to the 60's, moisture collects on the metal that warms slowly.
Being near Puget Sound adds to your problems when the fog rolls in.

I think you are right as I can throw a rock and hit salt water depending on the tide...

It was something that never occurred to me with a lot of the old car guys now in NV, AZ and ID not having any storage problems...

Maybe the cars stay in CA along with the lathe and mill and the Deere backhoe moves to WA?

It really is the only negative surprise in my long range plans and that of prop tax tripling in 15 years after 747 was tossed...

I think prop tax is still a huge factor for many seniors...
