Metal Roof Question

   / Metal Roof Question #111
But Eddie or JB i have a feeling we would get along fine even if i hired either of you for a job. I pay cash for a work done when its due. In life the wife and i owe no one except the bank for our house and her student loans.

I know im not the only person that feels this way, most are either not the type person to say it or gonna bring it up here.

I'm pretty sure that is an acurate statement :)

Just for general knowledge, PVC pipe is joined by using purple primer that isn't actualy a primer. It is a conditioner that softens the PVC. Then you use clear glue that really isn't glue. It is a chemical that reacts to the purple primer and melts the PVC together.

There is glue for PVC, but it's not very effective and should never be used on PVC lines that have pressure on them.

Eddie

Thanks for the technical knowledge. See i did not say i knew it all, i did know that you used the purple "primer" and that its colored so inspectors can see it was used in an inspection in some areas. I also know i think there is a one step but most dont use it as you cant tell it from the glue.

I did realize the "glue" basically cold welded the PVC togeather though.

Seriously we would get along no matter how crochety i seem here on this post.

Glad to know you will post pics. If you brought me several jobs and the pics and homeowners numbers as well as agreed to pics for my job i may not be as over then shoulder as i would on some others.

You got my point, once the walls closed i have no idea what you did?

Looking closely at the roof, enough of the screws are loose or very rusty that to me it makes the most sense to replace them all.

That is the best way to do it.

And no purple primer.

Your plumbers are free to use what they want. I tell my clients what I'm going to use and why I am using it. If they insist on using another product, I will listen to them and then I will explain to them why I want to use my products. If they insist, I have the choice to either do it their way or walk away from the job. If a client insists on doing it your way and using a cleaner product instead of purple primer on PVC pipes, I won't do the job.

Not saying your way is wrong, just that I know that my way works and it's the only way that I will garanty my work.

Around here, the plumbing inspectors require purple primer so that they know that the joint was primed.

From the Oatey website.

FAQ :: Oatey.com

"1. What is the difference between pipe cleaner, primer / cleaner and primer?
All pipe surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned with pipe cleaner. The cleaner is formulated to remove surface dirt and any oil or grease that exists on the pipe from the manufacturing process. Primer/cleaner and primer contain more aggressive solvents and will soften the pipe surface to allow the solvent cement to penetrate more effectively. Primer is often required by plumbing code and sometimes a purple colored primer (purple primer) is needed."

I use the purple primer and HD clear cement on my sump pump discharge piping. I also use SCH 40 fittings, mostly 1.5 inch but some 2 inch.

A little overkill from what I see other installers doing but I charge enough to justify it.

The purple primer is a primer, no doubt, it preps the surface for the cement.
The stuff is a cocktail of very potent VOC's, don't get it in a cut on your hands or you will be yelping

I've used the cement as liquid band aid.
