Hi,

I have never been able to get the diff lock on my 65 to work and i wondered if it is just my operation. How do you put on and take off the lock. I know which lever it is but it has no effect if i push it down or pull it up. It may well be busted but i'd rather check before looking for a repair.

Thanks

Step down on the pedal after the wheels stop spinning to engage. To disengage release diff lock pedal, depress clutch to release or turn right or left or apply the right brake according to the owners manual.

I worked for a Massey dealer back in the 70's and had a customer step on the diff lock pedal while the wheels were spinning and tore things up pretty bad. The head mechanic removed all the chunks from the differential case and disabled the lock due to the high cost of repair at the customers request. possibly the same but you will never know for sure without tearing it down. Could be something simple too, I haven't looked at the parts breakdown.

You may not know its engaged unless you have the tractor pulling hard, with it engaged, and not seeing one tire spinning faster than the other.

Hi, thanks for that - i think it is broken because nothing seems to move or engage when i step on it. I'll add that to the list of work needed. Cheers

Namyessam, as you are someone in the know; may i pick your brains - i did a radiator flush because the engine overheated and since then i discovered a very slow drip of coolant from the water pump pulley. I was planning on taking out the water pump and refurbing it. Is there any other cause or any extra work i should do while i have the pump out? I'll probably replace the hoses as they are 50 years old and looking pretty well worn. Thanks

I am not familiar with a 65 but some things are similar enough.

Good time to change the thermostat. You should remove the radiator before removing the water pump. It will make the job easier and protects the radiator from damage from wrenches and other tools while removing the pump. While you have the radiator off, be sure to clean all the fins of dirt to insure good air flow though the radiator before reinstalling it. Use a good quality antifreeze.

Just curious. Where you a mechanic when you worked for Massey Ferguson dealer?

I guess it all depends what your definition of mechanic is. If I have given incorrect information here please correct me.

Sorry if you feel offended by my question. I just asked a simple question because you stated you worked for MF back in the 70's. you are not obligated to answer the question. FYI, I never implied in any of my messages that your information was wrong. Please show me if I implied that. You where backing up your advice by stating you used to work for MF. Your words not mine. Good day.

I was not giving advice when I stated I work for a Massey dealer, I described damage and a repair that I witnessed personally.

The MF65 has a radiator setup very similar to the 135 on up. The radiator sits on two fabric pads. Carriage bolts slide into the bottom. I beleive the right opening for the carriage bolt allows the radiator when loose to pull forward and then slide the left from it's locking posistion.

Removal of the sheet metal is required to remove the radiator. There are two versions of the MF65 water pump. Compare yours to the illustration before buying parts. You can either buy an entire assembly (plug and play) or rebuilding kit which may require heating the pump shaft to put the pully on it. It looks like the MF65 pump is held on my three bolts. Be careful removing these. To much torque will twist the bolts off. Console with your manual to remove and rebuild. If you don't have the parts book which shows an exploded view of everything on the tractor you can goto. AGCO Parts Books then log in a GUEST and lookup your tractor. If you have a printer, you can print the pages you need which can include a partlist with part numbers. Here's a snippet of the two different water pumps. Good luck. -kid

P.S. I have a thread which shows where I redid the hoses when refurbishing mine with pictures. The link is in my signature below.

I had the same problem pull the cover of there are 4 bolts that hold it on there is a cam that moves a pin that engages a jaw clutch and locks the differential the pin on mine was ceased I tried to free it up with penetrating oil that didn't work for me so I removed the housing loosened it up and did the brakes and seals at the same time.

Cooling system all refurbed now and engine purring away - the extra airflow since i thoroughly cleaned out the rad is magnificent. Would you believe i found there was no thermostat in the housing so replacing that will help winter running. It is much easier to remove the front panels completely to remove the radiator and then the water pump. Also removing the bypass elbow is essential in order to fit the new water pump without snagging with the little rubber bypass hose. Cheers for the advice.
