Mice

I tried the Sonic Thingies, plug them in, can't tell if they are working, bu was told by a friend it worked for him.
I tried the Cotton balls with Peppermint oil on them, not sure if it dod anything, still see droppings here and there.

My latest attach, I went to a Christmas Party, got a Aroma Therpy Machine and it had Peppermint Oil in the Box, what am I going to do with this... LIGHT DAWNED on steel Head, why not put it in Barn and see if it will drive out any mice with the peppermint oil scent.

It is now running in the Barn, smells good, but not sure what will come of it, other than a nice smelling barn... ok I can use that, but hoping for something to happen with the mice. We will see.. if it works, I thinking... get a company to repackage some product to a mice detergent.

Let me say that I know this is far fetched, but IF it works then this could be a biggy !

Rats, mice, raccoons, and even black bears can't stand the smell of Pine Sol, according to the Wild Life Service people. Put the Pine Sol in a spray bottle and spray around ........ Maybe soak some rags with it and lay across the engine compartment.

Brilliant! let us know if it works.

I had a nearly-new Kubota L3000 that "mice" chewed up some wiring in. I put mice in quotes because my suspicion is the culprits were either mice, ground squirrels, or chipmunks. I had to do a bunch of rewiring, then I put the wires in those corrugated wiring tubes [Home Depot, etc.]. After that, someone chewed through one tube, then so far never again. Had same problem with outdoor ham radio antenna wires. I also have problems with pack rats. No idea why rodents would be attracted to plastic-coated wiring.

Buddy of mine tried spraying his wiring with some of that bitter-apple solution that is supposed to keep dogs from chewing chair legs, etc. Each of us tasted the tiniest drop of it, and the taste stayed around for hours. However, mice still chewed his wiring again, seemingly zero effect from the bitter apple. By the way, I don't recommend trying the taste yourself.

Here is an article explaining the effort to 'go green' has lead to an increase in rodent damage. (The article is about cars, but soy wires can be found in many products.)

Anything plastic, wire, conduit... will get chewed if they want to get in or they thin it is a food source.

If I were to rewire my Tractor or any vehicle and IF I stay where I am, I would use the thin metal conduit.
I know it is harder to use metal than a flexible Corrugated Conduit, but it keeps them out or there is Flexible Stainless Tubing that can be used but you have to be careful about edges, although there are insert to protect the wire.

Same thing with my house, I could have used PEX Tubing, maybe no cheaper but I used copper tubing... no chewed pipes.

So far I have been lucky, but after writing this post I may have problems... Knock-on-Wood !

I mentioned before or in other "Mice" posting's, Cotton Balls with Peppermint Oil on them, three or four drops or as many as you think is needed.

Good Luck with the Tractor Wiring

I did have a Pack Rat situation, I found my hood packed with s***, I cleaned think up and left the hood open, tied down against the Support, and it worked, then I finally got the Barn in order with doors and drive the truck in every night... so far so good !

It's hard to say if the plug-in sonic devices had an affect on the mice in my barn. It didn't seem to affect their appetite in eating the bait I'd left for them.

The aroma therapy machine is an interesting option. I'd feel guilty walking in the barn and interrupting their zen-yoga sessions. Maybe a little music would be nice as well: Music for rats - Relaxing music to help your rat calm down and sleep - YouTube (it's kind of scary that 1.8k people liked this music meant for calming rats.)

Of course I'm joking.

Lastly, let me know how your mice detergent works out. You may be onto something there...

LoL !

Not even sure how I am going to tell if they are gone or even new ones have moved in... the Yuppie Mice.
I use my Barn as a Workshop, once in a while I will find a piece of chewed upper somewhere just a reminder that they are still around.

I was using the Tom Cat Flip Type Traps wit Peanut butter as bait but nothing is happening. The Bait is still full.
May have been the Cotton Balls with Peppermint Oil on them or maybe the Aroma Therapy Machine worked faster than I thought.

I have to fill this one once a day but I will do some check ing and cleaning up in a month and see where it is going.

Set up walk-the-plank mouse traps in a 13 gallon tall kitchen trash can with ramps and peanut butter. Center of tractor barn with no water in bucket. First 24 hours no mice. Peanut butter intact. Getting colder, below freezing tonight might help.

That is a great way to check to see if the Peppermint Smelling Barn is working.
I will set up a Walk-the-Plank on the smaller bucket with water, if after a short time frame I get no mice in the bucket... MAYBE the my idea will work in the long run. Gotta Luv Peppermint !

Forth day on my fancy walk-the-plank trap in the tractor shed. No mice. Saw a mouse maybe two scurrying along the wall when I got a tractor out yesterday. No mouse nest found on that tractor. I’m sure the mouse population varies. Poison blocks under the house, log cabin and another old house can sit for months untouched then suddenly be all gone.

Still want to corse metal screen the air filter inlet hose. Don’t want inadvertently suck debris or acorns into the engine.

One spring I noted during an unusual population explosion of chipmunks saw 20 crossing the 1/2 driveway while leaving. Using that area, conservatively figured there could be 5-10K around us! Going to need a bigger trap ;-)

Got in my 17 F450 today as I haven't used it in a few weeks and just wanted to move it around a bit. ..was greeted by that unmistakable stench of mouse. .. After about 30 minutes of hunting for the nest, I found it on top of the cab air filter. .. It was a matter of dropping the glove box out of the way, pulling a couple pieces of trim off, removing 2 - 7mm bolts and pulling the filter out. I vaccd it out really well and gave it the sniff test.. No mouse smell. New filter 26.00, and put it back together. ... There may be just a faint smell left..maybe from the smell going through the vents earlier. .. If it does not go away.. I'm getting rid of the truck.

Spread some baking soda into a glass baking dish and set it on the floorboard. Let it set if that is not enough pour some vanilla extract on some cotton balls in a glass bowl. If that does not work I will come and drive the truck away for you.

Forget all the fancy trap ideas.
A 5 gal bucket and a handful of popcorn in the bottom will get them all.
Just place the bucket close to a wall and they will find their way to the bottom being greedy as they are,
Mice simply can't jump higher that the bucket sidewall.

LOL, I had a bucket near my fireplace and some popcorn dropped to the bucket.
Overnight I had 6 mice trapped in the bucket!
(LOL, I don't believe in trap and release either)
