I would squeege on some asphalt emulsion driveway sealer once I had the surface as I wanted it. Diesel thins the asphalt cement in the grindings and converts it into cold patch that stays live and won't set up. Once cured the driveway sealer will not track around or run off into the environment.

I believe I would do kind of similar, but I would thin the emulsion with water, 50/50, and use hand sprayer, preferably before putting the final lift. I might spray, and hand spread (or 3 pt fertilizer spreader) with rock chips, screenings, sand, or the best fine millings you have, essentially chip sealing it.

That or borrow a tack wagon, and prime/sand properly.

winner! :)

... of coarse why not borrow your buddies 8 ton dump and get a load of asphalt while we are at it. You would be surprised how far 8 tons will go at 1.5" thick (~90 ft x 10 ft). Spread it with loader or box blade, hand lute your tracks, and roll with 4 ton steel wheel.

Its easy to spend someone else's money, time, and sweet.

prime's not too bad though. can always lay the millings and wait till there is a road project in your area, and then pay the co to zip over and shoot your road. take a few minutes at most. backup.. spray and go. and then you can sand.

Leeboy makes or made? a nice ~250 gallon tack wagon, perfect for small paving jobs like gas stations, patches, and turn lanes, I was surprised how nice it shot.

Soundguy, dumb question, but what does prime or tack cost per gallon, I know we typically pay $0.25 per square yard in place, and use mostly Special MS or RS-2.

we use special ms as well.. and yeah.. .25 per is what we are getting. seems universal around here.

I'd have to pull an invoice at work tomorrow to tell you what we are paying per gallon of the mix. typically we will buy only 2500g at a time unless we are really moving and have a few jobs lined up. remind me tomorrow if i forget to get back to you on the special ms.

Once the diesel dries it shouldn't track. Truthfully if you spray it on a good hot day and roll the heck out of it the millings will stay put for along time.

I am not sure how strong the ae sealer would be in this application. I have sealed millings for people in the fall time but never followed up with them.

diesel doesn't dry.

Ah, you guys make me cry! "Spray some diesel on it"! In the great state of Mass. that would get you 5 to 10yrs in the can! Actually, when there is a big time accident and a significant quantity of diesel or no. 2 oil is spilled on the road, They bring in a milling machine and mill the surface and repave over it.

The milled asphalt of course goes right back to an asphalt plant where guess what- state of Mass code now allows up to 30% RAP in new mix!!!:banghead:
