We're talking single phase here. 3ph is pretty hard to come by in residential areas, even when the poles have the 3 legs on them.

Hard to come by or hard to catch?

I recall as a kid telling people I just saw their refrigerator running past the house. Never saw one on 3 legs though.

Not necessarily hard to come by in North America. Just expensive. Power cos charge a big premium for 3 phase service installations.

Other parts of the world (like some places in Europe, among others) routinely run 3 phase as domestic service.
