Has anyone had any experience with the Modine Hot-Dawg heaters? http://hot-dawg.modine.com/

They are somewhat reasonable, $560 for 70K BTU, and are supposed to be good for garages and such. When the new home is built I'm having propane piped to the garage and am looking for a heater.

Don't have the Modine unit, but one similar in size. It has a vent, and I used to have one that did not vent to the outside. That is not good, as there is too much moisture in the air when they don't vent outside. I think you are on the right track.

Go with a vented unit, or turn your garage into a swamp.
Even if you use an infrared unit, the combustion creates water vapor.

This might seem dumb, but what would the temperature be of the exhaust from one of these units? Could it vent through a side wall with vinyl siding?

I don't know the temp of the exhaust. But I'd guess that you need a thimble type of setup like you'd have on a fireplace or stove.

High efficency gas furnaces can exhaust theough PVC pipe because most of the energy's been extracted from the combustion gases.

I don't think the vinyl siding is an issue if it's done right.

Can't comment about their heaters but they have a mfg. plant back in my home town of Pemberville, OH - Been there since before 1985. Small farm community.

I have the furnace you are talking about. I use it in a 30x40 shop that is well-insulated. It works well, only complaint is that it is somewhat loud (fan) when running. I set my thermostat @ 45 degrees for keeping the barn warm, and then turn it up when desired. It has been up for 2 years and has been no trouble. The side vent exhaust is nice, and easy to install, with no extra holes in your roof.

I too have a Hot-Dawg. It's mounted in my gargage. As mentioned the fan in LOUD!! Other than the fan, it works great and warms up very fast- I live in Montana.

Think it's a very good value.

GaryM - I have a HD75(75,000btu) in my 26x40 Barn with 15' ceilings. I'm totally pleased with its performance. No problems. Side wall exhaust is great.

I've also picked up a 45,000btu unit for my garage/shop building. Not installed yet but expect good results. Chuck

Eric - The Hot-Dawg uses 3" Type B vent. Pipe inside a pipe. Inside pipe is exhaust and outside pipe is the intake air. So the pipe temp is not that bad. The installation requires 1" clearance......so......the hole in the wall is slightly bigger than the pipe. A collar is used on the exterior/interior penetration to finish it. Chuck

Sounds like what I want. The garage walls will be SIPS and the ceiling will be insulated as well. Garage is about 24x32 with 9 1/2 foot ceilings.

Does that thing have a thermostat? Remote thermostat?

Thanks for the replys.

Would any body be able and willing to post any pics of installation, including the vent pipe thru the ext. wall?

Were they installed professionally, or is this DIYable?

If it OK, what did costs run?

For a 24x24x10 garage, w/ 2x6 insulated walls & door, what size would I need? I'm @ 6000ft. elev, so I know that the output gets de-rated slightly.

Thanks for all the input. Sorry to be so nosy, trying to convince the CEO.

This is the easiest time of the year to do some "convincing".

I did the installation myself, and used standard box store parts for the exhaust pipe out the side. Mine does not have the dual pipe (one inside the other) for exhaust and intake, but that is a clever idea. The thimble through the siding was not bad.

Hi Gary, researched the Hot-Dawg series but ended up going with an ADP CUH low profile gas heater. (Advanced Distributor Products) Price was about the same but the service was better. Did the install myself so it must be easy./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I have had no problem with the vinly siding and it will heat you out of house and home. The fan is not loud enough for you to have to stop talking or anything like that.
Over all they both will fit the bill. Oh yea!!!! 60,000 BTU in a 24 X28 insulated garage.
Take care

Yes, it does have or able to use a remote thermostat. Besure not to place too close or in the path of the fan.

Gary - I used a standard residential thermostat from the hardware store. The unit is mounted in the corner of the barn and is aimed at the opposite corner(caddy-corner). Unit is rated at 40' throw and my barn is 40' long so it works out real well. I mounted the thermostat about 10' away from the unit. The air flow goes to the other end of the barn and curls back on the perimeter walls and finally gets back to the thermostat. Two thermometers mounted elsewhere in the barn show my theory actually works in practice. Chuck

Eric - Mine was a DIY project. Unit was $500 +/-. Vent pipe, gas connection, small parts/pieces, etc another $75-125??

I'll take some pics for your viewing pleasure.

I'm not an HVAC expert(actually a bean counter) but I would GUESS the 45,000btu would work. You'd better check with a PRO. FYI the 30/45,000 btu are only 12" tall which is nice for lower ceilings. The 60/75,000 are still only 18" tall which is a feature I really liked. Chuck
