Moss... I guess we can consider ourselves lucky...

Attempted to settle yesterday and Insurance said they want to give it another week... which is OK... so looking at 6 weeks out before talking numbers...

The closest comp I have found for Moms car is 600 miles away in a Ford Dealers lot... one owner, damage free... 64,000 miles, garaged, etc... no moonroof or cruise... Ford Dealer asking 9k for the 2001 Corolla...

Plenty of 2001 Corollas with salvage titles 180,000 miles, body damage, etc in the 3 to 4k range...

Never had a theft claim so it's all new to us...

What about her personal property that was in the car?

Also, tags expired yesterday... was told NOT to renew which in California can get real expensive real fast with penalties... DMV said all I need is a copy of the stolen vehicle report... hope they are right!

We've not had that many officers killed in the line of duty, but enough to make you remember each one. One of the one's I remember most was because about 13 years after he was killed I ended up coaching his only child in grade school softball. Girl never played softball in her life, comes on my team (me a 1st year coach), about half way into the season, she's playing 3rd base for us. Bases loaded. Batter smacks a liner right at her. She stabs it out of the air, (one out) takes two steps and steps on 3rd base (the runner had taken off before she caught it, so two outs). Inexperienced base runner on 2nd sees the runner on 3rd take off, so she heads towards 3rd and my 3rd baseman looks at her and runs her down before she can get back to 2nd (third out). UNASSISTED TRIPLE PLAY! :D

Now, the kid doesn't realize what she just did. She walks back to 3rd base and gets ready for the next play! Half the adults in the stands don't realize what she just did. I'm standing there SCREAMING!!!! at the top of my lungs with joy! My assistant coaches are dancing like idiots. The girls on our team go wild. It is the holy grail of baseball plays and I got to thinking I hope her dad was watching over her. It was one of the highlights of my short coaching career. (That, and being able to coach my own daughters.)

Anyhow, I see her around from time-to-time at sporting events. I ask her what she's thinking about for college and future, etc... she always says she wants to go into victim counselling (as her mom did after her husband was killed). But the last time I saw her a few months ago, she said she changed her mind and wants to go into law enforcement. :)

Moss- that is a GREAT STORY! I actually got chills when I read the last line!

Covered by home owners policy in most states.
good luck with that my rig was broken into , they wanted proof of purchase on everything that was in that wasn't part of the car. I hope you have better luck with that than I did.

Yeah, she's a good kid. Hope life is good to her. Her mom's been through a lot. It was a 16 year old kid that killed the officer... over a possible stolen bicycle. Sad all the way around. Only thing that saved the kid from the death penalty was his age and I don't believe they ever found the gun. He got life without parole. You can read about his appeal, here, and it gives quite a bit of facts from the trial, witness testimony, etc.... Anyhow... Don't focus on the criminal, focus on the survivors of the aftermath of the incident. http://www.in.gov/judiciary/opinions/pdf/10241301cjb.pdf

I have a contractor friend who when he purchases a tool take a photograph of the tool and the sales receipt together. He also takes a photograph of the tool in a storage compartment on his service truck. He has a file drawer with alphabetical hangers and he puts the sales receipt under the alpha letter of the tool. Hammer = H - Saw = W. He said one trip to the office of a Insurance Adjuster without "Proof" of purchase or ownership was all he needed in his lifetime.

Good thinking... I couldn't prove the tires and rims were stolen from Mom's car so it was a no go...

Dealer couldn't help and said the tire serial numbers are on the warranty book... which of course I had in the glove box all neat and orderly...

So B.I.L. got his truck back. Two body shops want to total it because the cab was pushed in from the bed. B.I.L. removed seat from cab, used wood bracing and his and a buddy's legs and pushed cab back out from inside. Can't tell its dented! Took to insurance adjuster. $8000 damage. May get it repaired now.

Aaannnndddd..... cops call him yesterday and tell him they found his dirt bikes in good shape, sooooo..... they're driving back to FL today to get them! YIKES!

Kid they found in the truck implicated a different person as the truck thief, and a 3rd party as having the dirt bikes.

Truck theft, dirt bike theft, tool theft, knocked up girlfriends, demands for abortion, drive by shootings, recovery, insurance, U-Haul, campers, heartbreak and triumph.... what a soap opera. What scumbags. They want a truck for fun and don't care in the least how this affects the people they steal from. Just the aggravation of the wasted time by my B.I.L. and his wife, let alone the thousands and thousands of dollars they are out, and the loss of some sentimental items from the truck.... Yikes!

Appreciate the update... we have thought what if the car was found as hulk on the side of the road...

Still will keep an eye out and I would recognize it if I see it... even if it is years from now.

So far no settlement offered by the insurance... closest I found was the same year and mileage 3 states away at a Ford Dealer... asking price of $8,950... most have been in the 6 to 6,500 range with a lot more miles...

Blue Book is $5500...
