It's just frustrating to be violated... especially when it's your 80 year old Mom.

The standard Law Enforcement reply is property crimes are less than low priority and this the reason for insurance.

Crime is out of control... standing room only at the Police Chief Town Hall a few weeks back and the Chief painted a grim picture frankly stating unless a gun is involved or a physical assault... don't count on a Police response.

Within the last two weeks I have had connections to the following:

Two separate murders (14 year old and a 20 year old)

Several residential break ins

Several commercial break ins

Mom's stolen car

Several auto break ins

Keep hoping things will get turnaround for the better and it never happens.

I can't do much about any of the above except diligently search for a lead on Mom's stolen car by scouring for sale ads...

sounds like the town has surpassed the critical mass of gangstas per cop. Anarchy for some. Too bad you can't pay some "Guidos".

If it was just one town or city... the simplest option would be to move.

The problems is endemic to many regions of the San Francisco Bay Area... not all... but many.

A Federal Judge said California prisons are overcrowded which resulted in many low level criminals being set free... read Durg and Property Crimes.

The city where I work has gone public because it's police officers are being followed home after shifts and the people doing the following have even been so bold as to mock a gun by pointing a finger at officers...

I was just thinking maybe the time has really come to leave and head North and then I read in the Olympian, the hometown Washington State newspaper about rampant auto thefts up there.

Seems similar to Mom... thieves target Hospital and Medical Center areas looking to steal cars... why...?... because the parking areas have lots of strangers coming and going at all hours around Hospitals and many are pre-occupied arriving and leaving... the story said it's a perfect place for car thieves to work... plus a great mix of vehicles to choose from.

If only this was Texas or Branson...

As mentioned... Police as policy no longer respond to property crimes... sad but true.

Police do respond to all calls involving a gun, domestic abuse and assault... that is about it and the criminal element knows it.

Show up at the person's place, and if it's the car, pull out a gun and then call the police and tell them you caught someone stealing your car and are holding them at gunpoint, and they're real fidgety so you might have to shoot them. Maybe that will check off the necessary check boxes to get some response.

I would feel pretty let down if law enforcement was that bad out here. Makes me appreciate our police department a whole lot. They are great.

Person was sketchy on the phone... said I need to call in the morning and will text me the location to meet up and only cash accepted!

(Items have moved to a jurisdiction where I do have connections)

Called in a favor and am now getting action from the top down.

My brother-in-law and his wife are down in Daytona camping and riding dirt bikes. Last week they drove their 2003ish diesel dully pickup with two dirt bikes in the back to a bar to watch a race. When they came out, the truck was gone. It was parked in a bank parking lot on a Sunday afternoon/evening. Cops said they wouldn't bother checking the surveillance tapes on Monday at the bank because the truck will probably in Texas by then. Something about Texas not requiring VIN numbers for something and its the easiest place to dispose of stolen vehicles. Their insurance company gave them a rental car and told them to rent a U-Haul to tow their camper back after vacation. Stolen vehicles are at the bottom of the list, especially in large urban areas. The cops told my B.I.L. that. Told him to just forget it and move along....

Anyhow, hope you find your mom's car. Be careful if you go on any Craigslist "meet ups". Last year, we saw a hold-up for a Craigslist cell phone purchase and the getaway driver was a female classmate of my daughter's from grade school who's boyfriend talked her into it. Yikes!

Thanks Moss... I hear what you are saying and others too.

I'm very much a live and let live unless you do someone I care about wrong... guess it is a character flaw because the loss is insured... don't know how that will pan out since it is often hard to value something in exceptional condition.

Crooks really have no fear anymore... it's almost like one big game.

All the ads with parts of her car were only up a few hours today... none are up now.

Being a car person and the one who took care of her car... no one knows it better than I do and there are many ways I can identify parts... mostly because the car undercarriage and engine compartment has many signatures from the workers that made it plus a few mods I made...

At least getting the ear of law enforcement has brought a little comfort today...

I'm glad to hear that you have something to go on now and more importantly that the police are doing something about it.

Keep us updated if you can.

... it is often hard to value something in exceptional condition.

And therein lies the rub. You buy something, take exceptional care of it. It gets damaged or stolen, and you are only entitled to market value of the item even though its priceless to you. As you've noted, where the heck are you going to find another car just like that in just that condition, let alone the sentimental value (which has zero value to others or the courts)? That's why its best not to get attached to physical objects (says the guy with stuffed garages and sheds). But the memories an object can trigger are strong. At least they can't steal your memories. :)

Yeah... we have all the pictures and newspaper story in a nice album...

Hit a dead end today... the car has dropped from radar... too bad because local law enforcement was willing to go out with me and make an arrest...

It's almost as if the bad guys know not much is going to happen on a Sunday so they move fast.

One good thing came up... learned the Sheriff had transposed the license plate numbers on the report and that is now corrected... the VIN was correct... just not the plate.

Insurance is willing to declare Total Loss.

If accepted we would no longer own the car and would not be able to recover should it be found.

Asked if we could delay and was told OK... still holding out hope.

Also, there are personal items in the car Mom would like back.

After 18 days... is it time to fold?
