Hmm. Well looking further into the ch25 specifically looks like the mating gears on both the crank and cam are manufactured and sold as one piece integral crank/gear and cam/gear assemblies. Makes it less likely but certainly not impossible that the gears have spun on their respective shafts

And there are timing marks on both gears so pretty straight forward to verify the timing.

Finally…got a break in weather and other tasks to spend a few minutes back here…
Somehow I now have compression on cylinder 1, but still nothing on the original problem cylinder 2. I injected air into this cylinder and had some leakage through the exhaust pipe. Oddly, while cranking the motor to check compression earlier another push rod bent on this cylinder on the intake. Remembering the lifter being stuck on the exhaust valve earlier, I pulled the intake side and sure enough, it was near impossible to move. I bled it and got it to moving again and installed another new rod. All seem to be fine now, but at this point the injected air into the cylinder 2 plug port seems to be leaking through exhaust or carb…I’m guessing I need to look into the head gasket now…

Is it possible that you have a stuck exhaust valve?

I don’t think so, because I see them all moving when I bump it over (both valve covers are off.) And I can push all valves down with my thumbs and they seem to operate freely with good spring pressure. But, I could be wrong…🥴

You have a valve problem and need to remove that head

I believe you and some others are right—further examination yesterday I found exhaust valve not fully closing, and the head gasket has break just about the area where the exhaust bolts to the head.

Sure ‘nuff! Yesterday found exhaust valve not fully sealing and a broken head gasket…
