This is a guess but pretty sure they are re-using the tanks and putting on a new trigger system on the tanks. Basically, they are getting a raw material tank back to re-use!!!
Each fire extinguisher is made in a die that molds the year of manufacture into the bottom of the tank. I doubt they are rebuilding them but rather melting the aluminum and forming new tanks. By doing that kidde is saving money on raw material and keeping 40 million tanks out of land fills.I could see that on the bigger fire extinguishers but on the small ones that I had, dont think they're worth rebuilding.

I thought I was about to get 4 new units, these model numbers checked out but then I noticed this pic on the page. Pictured are the 4 units I have.
I guess I can still use 2 of these for target practice!
