More Than One Piece Of Farm Property, Issues?

One of the worst problems a friend of mine has ran into is several counties attempting to tax him for his whole set of farm equipment. He has had to spend his time, gas and effort multiple times to prove all of his equipment is taxed somewhere to each of 3 county governments.

So much depends on the local environment. I've left a tractor sit on vacant ground, I did chain it to a tree. Make sure your insurance covers it and don't worry. OTOH, a couple of miles is no big deal to drive it back and forth.

As for taxes, how that's handled (for an AG exemption) varies very much from state to state, and even among counties within the same state. Best to talk with the county auditor.

I have several hay fields all with in 7 miles of the house and transport back and forth no isues with that. The only time I leave tractors or implements is when I can leave them near the house of the people I rent from. Otherwise I drive the unit home at night.

I'd forget my own head if it weren't nailed on, that's a fact.

Silly, but one of my bigger concerns is actually taking the stupid shovel or hammer or what have you, getting up to the property and realizing I'd forgotten something important.

Don't figure to forget the tractor and implement, but it's all the darn small stuff. A small, on-site toolshed might be the ticket. Shoot, I've got triplicates of about everything anyhow, thanks to a life time of estate sales, auctions and yard sales. :D

Good insight, but no worries here. Same county and same township.

I had this "problem" about six years ago.

We purchased an old dairy farm that needed "renovation".

It was only abot 10 minutes, six miles from my orginal house.

Now, as I look back on it, carrying two complete "homesteads" was a flipping outrageous mistake on my part.

I cannot say how much time was lots moving stuff back and forth, let alone the equipment that was not on the right property for the right time. You know how one job creeps into another? Where is my bobcat? comes to mind.... :)

I cannot tell you how security of my property worked out. I had people coming up my driveway at the new place- "Well no one lives here."
I had law enforcement coming up to the place - "You live HERE now?", "You know where so-and-so lives?".
I had stuff wander off between ten minute visits.
I had a new neighbor complain of "construction noise"....
I had the tax people snooping around.....

Happy milestones were getting the electic working.

Happier milestones were getting moved into the property more than 10 minutes at a time.

The best day of my life was when we sold the other place.

Then we just worried about the one place, although I still cannot find my bobcat..... :)

When we bought our land, our city house was a good 45-60 minutes away, 25-30 miles. The city house did not really have a place to put a trailer with a tractor. It could have if I needed too but it would have been interesting.

We left the tractor and implements on our land. We are at the end of a private road and heavily wooded. I put up a gate which helped as well. The tractor was always hidden and I would chain it to a tree. The fuel cut off valve got closed too.

I never had a problem. Knock on wood. :D

But the place was remote, access was very limited, and only a few people knew the tractor was on the place.

Frankly, I think I would have had more vandalism problems if I had had to leave the tractor and trailer at our city house.

Later,
Dan

I used to hobby farm a 10 acre piece about 20 miles away. I never had any problems with leaving stuff there, but if I needed some tool or whatever, it kinda sucked. I only did it for 1 year, gave it up. Turns out, l could buy field corn cheaper than I could grow it on a small scale. Once in awhile, the naysayers are right. :(

Not a bad idea but I would also research this yourself. My assessor didn't know much about this topic at all.
