Chuck, I was reading in a book about them puffballs and they said to soak them, then cook'em, But I cant remember what to soak them in.

Ron, this is what I use for plucking them sponge delights. I also use a knife and leave the stem. Around here the best tasting, most plentiful, and easiest to identify mushrooms are chanterelles. They show up after a hard rain in middle of the summer in woods with young oaks.

Old nylon onion bags are supposed to work great for spreading the spores. Same thing for orange bags.

Beenthere,

When the shroom just breaks throught the ground, has a bit of the appearance.

But to tell you the truth, never spent much time doing a detailed study on various shapes and appearances. So, what you're telling me is.... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Devildog,

Yes I have morels on my place. Used to hunt for them in Missouri, and on a good day you could find maybe 5 lbs. Last spring I picked well over 100 lbs on my 10 acres. Funny thing is, nobody in Texas seems to know what they are. I just get strange looks and comments about "toadstools" when I mention them. Fine with me!

I think you're right. I've had lots of toadstools at my place; always "heard" they were poisonous. At any rate, I wouldn't know one mushroom from another, so we just eat the ones from the grocery store.

Once you've had morels.... fresh picked.... just like asparagus fresh from the garden. Nothing else like it!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I just saute them in butter and eat them by the handful. This site has excellent pictures and some other recipes too. The strange thing about these mushrooms is that when you figure out where and when to look, you can harvest many pounds very quickly - there's nothing rare about them like morels.
