Does anyone have any experience with Mosquito traps? They are Mississippi bad in n. California right now! I have seen good an bad reviews on the propane powered ones.

We have one of the propane models and feel it's an asset around the yard. Curious to see what others have to say.

They're expensive and unreliable. Your best bet? Buy yourself a Stihl backpack blower/sprayer and some Talstar P and go to work.

I tested a beta version of the propane Mosquito Magnet on Cedar Key, Florida, my lovely wife's idea @ $1,500.

We lived in a stilt home over salt marsh.

The Mosquito Magnet bag was reliably filled with mosquitos daily, perhaps weighing 1/3 ounce total.

I figured there were TONS of mosquitos in the marsh grass.

Get it?

I recommend topical 40% DEET.

Yep. Spray every bush, tree, etc. I did this when we had a swarm of mosquitos after our flood and I whiped them out for a month. Had to spray again a few times but it was an infestation we were dealing with. I had people calling me to come spray their yards too.

I've been using a Burgess fogger (bought at a garage sale). Fluid from Home Depot. Good for 2 - 3 days. Seems to be denying food for the birds but they'll just have to go farther out. I fog at sunset when the wind is zero. Neighbors think the property is on fire.

I use garlic spray and a fogger. It works, kinda sorta. Not near as good as 2-4D, which can't be got in Canada any more.

We used the propane version at previous house. They do cut the mosquitoes back. We saw it get better over time. The first year or two removed a chunk of the population. Then it did a better job of keeping that smaller population out of the yard.

Don't have to use it now. 6 years ago we moved to a town that sprays as part of a mosquito control district. Nice to have to deal with mosquitoes.

Anyone have any experience with Talstar P around creeks (waterways) and wildlife (turkeys and deer). Is it going to contaminate the game meat?

I would avoid it around drinking water. Wildlife will be ok, what you want to do is spray bushes in your yard or trees, places where mosquitos will be in large numbers.

I own nothing but stihl power equip including a BR600. I can't justify $700 for the SR450 that I'll use a couple times a year. The Hudson gets great reviews!

The 450 is too top heavy with a full tank, that's why I went with the SR200. I wanna say I paid $399?

I have used the $69 Fogger from Home Depot/Lowes which are propane driven but are very unstable and unreliable. When they worked they worked. I also purchased a Mosquito Magnet that was about $450 and it worked for a while. It was very high maintenance and I quit using it and got rid of it. Looking again I would would go the higher end Stihl/fogger approach. This has been a great thread for finding info.

Looking at this video it seems it would be fine after drying. We have (organic) free range chickens and they seem to be fine with all sorts of non food type items they find in our yard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRgQO_ynFSs
