try a .338 rifle sometime, longer range, cheaper ammo, and it will take a bear down no problem.. I saw the devastation it did to a big wild boar, and no way a bear could take that either..
I can think of more than a couple of different .338 cartridges, which one are you refering to? Can't be a .338 Lapua Magnum because that ammo aint cheaper even if you reload.
I'm old enough where I don't need anything else at this point in my life though. For longer ranges past 150, my .300 win mag has always served me well.
That said, in a forest where shooting ranges are short, that .45-70 lever is pretty much perfect for anything IMO.
