When I taught desert search & rescue courses on poisonous snakes/spiders/scorpions - I always cautioned airmen [it was a usaf thing] to ALWAYS PUT YOUR EYES BEFORE YOU MOVE.
Most bites are on the hands, people tend to just reach out without thinking.

Our most toxic-venom snake in that desert was the mojave green [never encountered one in the wild, only behind glass]
Most bites were from sidewinders, and seldom fatal, you could find these easily enough if you were hunting them.

My father had a saying regarding machinery & electricity - the moment you stop respecting it, It Will Kill You.

I have found that advice gets me along with most everything in this universe... both natural and man-made.

I urge people to not kill anything that is outside your house that you aren't going to eat since the "thing" isn't interested in eating you. ((I have never lived in polar bear country, which is the ONLY land mammal in North America that has You on the delicacy menu))

Skeeters are omitted from that, kill all of them you can - it won't make a dent, but you will feel better.
If you would like a snake recipe, I have a few :)

You are a rare bird. May I ask why? family? Job?

Came for the job but wouldn't leave now if the job went away.

Maybe not as rare as you think. In my small group of coworkers there are are people from Tx, GA, FL, NM, and TN.
And I have quite a few non coworker friends from south.

I dropped my car off for a technical service bulletin update yesterday and one of the guys at the dealer had an unusual accent. I asked where he was from and he replied "The South, South Boston". Even Yankees aren't dumb enough to believe that Bostonians have suddenly acquired a drawl, so I grinned and he then fessed up "South Carolina". I asked how he came to move north and he said he came up because his brother had moved back to Boston. Turns out his grandfather was from the Boston area and they still had relatives up here.

I suspect there is more South to North migration than you might think. Quite a few Southern born academics, engineers and professionals live around here in the Boston area and as many Southern universities and businesses have translocated Northerners.

My son willfully moved north this week! And yes, he did receive a good education in Mississippi! Starting Monday with GM at the proving grounds as an engineer. Everyone in the south does not suffer from a bad education.

Yep, Alabama gave Michigan State a good 38-0 education at the Cotton Bowl. ;-)

The south is here to help!

We are likely going to be moving to the Miss, Louisiana, Ark. area. Some questions... Our Sheppard has never encountered a poisonous snake. Is there any danger to him, or will he have the instinct to be more cautious....

I put my hunting boots in the garage for long periods. Is there a danger of critters crawling in there? Anything else we should know about? Thanks
Anything going on with this move? A lot has been said about moving from north to south but I tried it once and came right back up north. I like cold weather more than hot and muggy, but I have to say the south is more polite and friendly, IMHO.

I was born in the Midwest and for the most part lived in IL and MN until 40+ then took a job in the SW/NM for 20 more. Thought I'd stay there but family ties pulled me to NE Georgia. Quite different but nicer than I expected. Great roads for my motorcycle habit, summer sucked but no real winter, not bto MN standards. You do have to eat biscuits and can't even find a decent breakfast burrito!

Sounds like New Mexico spoiled you. Here's Sharn Jean's recipe...we make ours at home.

Ingredients (approximate)
4 eggs, blended (either ahead of time or after being added to frying pan)
6 to 8 small or medium flour tortillas
1/4 # pork sausage, crumbled
1/4 chopped onion
2 roasted and peeled Hatch peppers, chopped (Note)
4 slices American Cheese
Salt, pepper

Some of that New Jersey Picante sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
In a medium size frying pan, fry the sausage nearly done, and drain the grease. Add the onion, stir on
medium heat for a minute or two, or until onions begin to clarify. Add the peppers, stir, and add the
eggs. Continue to stir until the eggs are done; and remove from heat.
Spoon the ingredients into the tortillas, and top with cheese and/or Picante sauce as desired.
Enjoy.
Leftover ingredients can be made into burritos and the burritos frozen for another time. They are
excellent reheated; about 2 or 3 minutes in the microwave will do it.
Note: Hatch peppers, if available fresh, may be roasted and peeled ahead of time. I like to put them on
the charcoal grill on a medium heat, until the skin begins to bubble up, turn, for a few seconds, remove
and freeze. The skins may be removed before or after freezing, as desired. If not available, canned
and diced chili peppers may be used, or any other pepper that you prefer.

Sounds good, I make em at home as well but in S NM you can get any variety you want on just about every corner. Plenty of Mexican places here in N GA but not breakfast. Yumm, Hatch Chiles.

Well... Arkansas it is! Down here now for a week looking for a rental until we pick up a house. So far, so good! Beautiful area, friendly people, and I like fried okra!

The Russellville area is beautiful! Places are affordable and everything seems less expensive. Gas is 30 cents cheaper.
