here is a pic. of a house about a mile up the road from me. they jacked it off the foundation, dug a big hole behind it, poured some concret footers to take the cribbing, then moved it back 60 ft . then they jacked it way up in the air so they can pour the walls and set in on new foundation.

That reminds me from when I was little. My father had the job to move the house that used to be in Quality Markets parking lot (here in Silver Creek) and move it up the hill from the store. My uncles business is to raise and move buildings so he was responsible for moving it up the hill and putting it into postition. Then my father hooked everything back up, finished remodeling it and left for the new people to move in. Luckily only one accident happened during the whole job, one of the 10 wheeler drivers stalled the truck on the hill while bringing stone into the jobsite. Ended up cranking the wheels when the truck rolled backwards and rolled the truck over to its side sending the stone down the road into Quality Markets parking lot.

Side not, Quality Markets never has done anything to where the house use to sit and only a few years ago finally graded off the area. (the house was moved over 15 years ago).

Do you know who the outfit was that moved this house back?

no i don't ! but if it is important to u i can stop and find out. Back in the early 1950" my family bought a house that was in the way of the ny, thruway and we had it moved thro a field about , 1/4 mile, that guy moved and set that house with narry a crack in the paint.. i beleive that fellows name was HARTZLOF or something like that. the guy new his stuff. he was having a worker problem at the time so he cut my dad a deal we supply the labor and he would supply the machines and know how. i was just about ready to enter HS at the time, but i remeber it quite well. i imagine Robert u know the area this is in? EDEN NY.

The guys name is Hartloft and he is my uncle. That was why I was curious. Did you live at the house along the thruway? The thruway cuts thru our property and even though it is about a long ways away, it is still loud and annoying which is why I want to get as far away from it as possible /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I have never gotten use to going out back to hunt and not being able to hear anything but the noise of the thruway, or the hum of the powerlines when it rains. Also, I have Rt. 20 right in front of my house so it is a very noisy place here (but it is my home and I do hold it dear for some reason /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) Take care.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Blennerhasset Island is in the Ohio River, between Parkersburg, West Virginia and Belpre, Ohio.

Here's some interesting pictures of the move of the Putnam-Houser house from Belpre to Blennerhasset Island in 1986...

Here's a little more background on Blennerhassett Island...

It's interesting to read up on if you're into early American history.
