MOVING EXPERIENCE

   / MOVING EXPERIENCE #11
I have always been facinated with moving houses. When I was a teenager, I watched them move many of the homes that were in the path of the Beltway in Virginia. Dad worked for the telephone company and they had to monitor moves when they were near telephone lines and I got to go along.

Biggest one was a large Civil War era colonial in Fairfax, Virginia. I was the "how good did we do" monitor as dad new the contractor. Got to set a glass of water on the fireplace mantle just before the move, and checked for how much was spilled when it was in its final location. About a quarter mile move across country. Didn't spill a drop.

The last one I saw was in Falls Church, VA in 1983, they moved a two story wood frame farmhouse also of the Civil War era around the block on the local streets. It was also my son's first, but he didn't remember it as he was only 2 weeks old. But, he did get to witness another in Blacksburg, VA last summer.

Most of these homes were moved by a family named Patram, that was located in No. Va.

I would love to see another one moved.

DON'T know the cost (but i sure wanted to ask) but did not. they had to take down some big trees and dig the roots out to make room. then they are going to put an additon on that house AND build a 3 car garage with an apt. above. all i know is, it is interesting to watch and there is some MAJOR $$$$ being spent.
