In Illinois were not suppost to take wood out of our own counties, the state parks now require you to purchase local firewood from the park area, and will not allow firewood to be brought in anymore. All due to the emerald ash bore...

Emerald ash borer and Dutch Elm.

I support the whole idea of not moving firewood and obtaining it locally, but the parks are taking extreme advantage and charging unbelievable prices for their precious wood. Funny thing is, (or not so funny really...) is that our local state park cuts all of their own wood and yet still charges a ridiculous price.

This only encourages bad behavior, which they must then address via punishment. (I've not gotten one, but I've seen other get tickets!) People will bring their own, or even worse, they'll go on a walk-about and gather their own. It doesn't take long for that to begin to be very evident as the trails become more and more barren near the campgrounds and picnic areas...

Again, I don't have a problem with restrictions on bringing in wood, due to the possible damage of introducing unwanted bugs and disease, but they need to encourage good behavior, not discourage it...

I am in VA and had never heard or thought about this until I read it here. Then today I was coming home from an appointment and jumped off at the Culpeper exit and they have a large billboard "Protect Virginia's wilderness - leave your firewood behind to keep out the beetles". About 3 years ago there were a few VA agriculture guys that went around putting up these large blue triangular things hanging from the trees out here - I think those are for the Emerald Ash Borers. They come collect them in the spring and replace them.

those cone/traps are Around a lot of our roadways. Its pretty scary knowing that you have trees that can be wiped out. The hemlock woolly adelgid is also a nasty pest to us. One forester i was talking to said that if the hemlocks go so do the trout. The hemlocks shade so many trout streams that the temp will climb and wipe out the native trout.

Thanks for all of the comments. I called the county where she lives and talked to an environmental guy at the county government office. He said no problem. They have the same insects and problems that we do.

Doesn't appear to be wholly true: Moving Firewood | Emerald Ash Borer Information Network I have no way to assess the accuracy of the above website, just one of the first I found on moving firewood.
