I agree with Egon on front chains on hard dry surfaces because of the need for some differential "slippage" with the front differential while in "4WD". I believe one would be "ok" on any surface with some "slip" like mud, snow, ice, etc. Jay

I always enjoy reading the posts on TBN, the information is great and like one fella said, this is pretty close to seat time without the saddle sores... Just to add to the question, has anyone had any experience with chains on the front tires of a 4WD tractor? Particularly a sub-compact. I just purchased a SC2400 with a blower and wondered if front chains were worth the time? The drive way only has a slight incline but it"s about 800 feet long. I've been up here 30+ years and seen it pretty woolly at times but until now I've either plowed it myself, (4WD truck) contracted it, or used a walk behind blower. I am getting to the age where if it were too crappy out I could roll over and wait for the sun, but that won't help anyone else get in or out...lol!! Any thoughts?

My driveway is quite level. It was recommended that I use them with my ATV 4 wheeler rig, so I used them.

I haven't needed them with my tractor for snowblowing despite how deep and heavy the snow was. I think whether or not you would need them would be specific to your rig. Ask the dealer if any other users have found them necessary.

Updates... We've had some snow, not a lot, but also rain. Seems every day when I get home driveway is slushy, in the AM when it's time to go UPHILL, it's all ice. I'll be glad when cold weather's here to stay and we get only snow. Tractor still has had no problem going up & down driveway with turfs & no chains-- guess we'll see how that works this winter.

Nice looking rig ! IMHO as a weather geek, IMHO NE will get some snow this weekend. As usual many of the "models" are in conflict. We will probably be visited by an "Alberta Clipper". They generally drop ~3" of snow. There is a possibility that this system could intensify once it reaches the ocean. The storm track will determine who if anyone gets anything. Jay

Update on my end.....I had the JD950 out a couple of times with about 5 inches of a fairly wet snowfall each time...just plowed the snow with the fel in 4wd....turfs, no chains, and not a spin of any wheel. I anxiously await a big snowstorm! (I'm glad I waited on the chains!)

Almost the same here, hondo-- little snow, mixed with rain over he past week... My slushy driveway is now an icy driveway. Been going through a fair amount of sand. Right now there's some light snow falling... you know, the type that's just enough to cover the sand and polish the ice up real nice and make even walking treacherous....

Well...

Woke up this morning to about 8-10 inches, blowing everywhere. Should see 12-14" before it's all said and done.

It would appear that my wish for some snow to play in has been granted. Now I need to figure out what to do with the car I drove to work ( 50 miles - 2 hours, left the house at 4A), while I clear things out. I know darn well I ain't going to make it back up the driveway tonight, and the last thing I want to do is bury it right in the middle of everything...I suppose I could park it out by the highway at the country church, and have my boy come pick me up in his Wrangler.

It's been asked a couple of times about chains on the front wheels of a CUT. I have a hilly, curvy 1/4 mile long gravel driveway. I plow it with my Cub Cadet 7260, and have used chains on the front wheels only for 10 years without a problem. Huge difference in overall traction, and also helps to steer it with the weight of a plow on the 3 pt. I have chains for the rears, but have never used / needed them.
