Mowing Mower Deck Stands

A quality product at a fair price...wish I could say that about all my purchases. One point about the small diameter wheels...they roll great on a clean concrete floor but if you encounter even a small stone, the wheel will instantly stop. No biggie, I just sweep the debris off the garage floor before maneuvering the deck.

They are well made, and very functional BUT, they orient the output shaft and its seal pointing downwards along with the vent nut at the lowest point on the gearbox. Yes, there's a vent nut. It's a small hex head thingy with a tiny hole in one of the flats. Over the winter, my deck lost most of its gear oil out that vent nut, all over the raised wood floor of my barn and making a huge mess. When I questioned Larry, and got a prompt reply of, "Yes, I've heard of that happening with others....." So we have a product that MAY result in nearly all of the oil in the box to leak out all over your spotless concrete or wood floor. Is that good? If there was a warning or something to alert us to that fact, at least I'd know what to expect. Because I like the rollers, the fix or workaround I came up with is to A) drain the gearbox oil out at the end of the season. (not a bad idea to change it yearly except you have to remember to put it in before the first mow! B) Remove the mounting bolts that hold the gearbox in place and turn it 180, so the output shaft and the vent nut are pointing up. Both are a pain when it has turned chilly, and the only thing you want to do is get the plow on the tractor, and go in and watch the game. Personally, I'm opting for B. Great idea, poor execution IMO.

I have only heard of this problem with Kubota MMM's, the JD mowers do fine stored vertical.;)

Why can't you just remove the vent nut and replace it wjth a non vented one for the winter??? Just hang the vented one on the drive shaft w/wire so you'll remember to replace it when it's time to mount the deck.

Well I made my own - 2 3/4x12" hex bolts, 4 4" wheels from mcmaster, 4 3/4 washers, 2 roll pins and 4 clips. Cost about $30 total and they work very well.

First year, I had some leaking but just a little and I check and refill in the Spring anyway. Mine didn't empty the gearbox (I'm using 80w90), but it does weep a cup or so over the winter. I store my deck in unheated space so the 90W gets pretty thick so that might prevent the leaking a bit.

PeterK, can you post pictures of your set up? I would really like to see how you did it. Thanks in advance.

Materials list:
2- 3/4 x 12" hex bolts
4- 3/4" washers
2- 3/16 x 1 roll pins Lowe's
4 - hitch pins TSC
4- 4" plastic wheels for 3/4 axle McMaster
2- Cat 01 adapter sleeve from 3/4" id to 1" od TSC

The wheel on the left (in photo) is fixed with a washer and roll pin. The sleeve fits inside the mower anti-scalp mount and is secured through deck, sleeve and bolt using the Kubo pins. The right wheel is secured between two hitch pins. I used a wider wheel than others I've seen to make it more stable.

The output shaft on my Kubota 60" MMM (RCK60-27BA) is pointed upwards. It's only been about 1 week and my MMM is brand new, but so far, no leaks.

I keep my deck on a hand truck. With two patio blocks at the base, it gives me just enough height to swing the deck up and rest on the blocks with the gage wheels off the ground. I haven't seen any oil, so the true pessimist that I am tells me that I am very low on oil.
I had this extra hand truck, the patio blocks were laying around and I always have bungees around. One to hold the shaft from swinging and one up top to hold the deck to the hand truck. One bungee, that's it and the deck stays put even with me taking the pulleys and spindles apart.

Price $0.00
I had everything .

Thanks PeterK for taking the time and effort to post this. I don't store my MMM off the tractor so I hate to spend $100 on stands. But I'm getting too old and feeble to manhandle the mower when I take it off to service it,sharpen my blades, and clean the underneath.

Your solution would be perfect for me. Thanks again.

I was so surprised by this great idea that I raced outside to the garage to check the deck, only to be surprised and reminded that it is on the Bota at the moment...

I just finished the scheduled service on my MMM and used the stands I made from the instructions and example given by PeterK.

What a difference. Much better and easier with the MMM on a stand.

Do you have a part number for the wheels you used?

I just bought a set with the 5" wheels for my Kubota BX2200 60" mower deck. I have to say I'm very pleased with them. They arrived quickly, well packaged and I'm impressed with the quality. Took me less than 5 minutes to install them and get my deck safely stowed against he wall of my garage, freeing up a whole lot of space. Also, it will be much easier to work on the deck, remove and sharpen the blades, etc.

Thanks Larry, I am one satisfied customer.

regards
Paul
