Mower info. ?

I've got the "itch" to pick up a sickle bar mower.
I'll probably not use it alot so "good used" may be the answer , rather than 2500-3000 dollars for a new one /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I think I would prefer a 3 pt. hitch.
Any tips on what to look for ? (mfg., trouble spots , used price, etc. )

There's a few older models that still offer parts support from the manufacturer. My personal favorite is the New Holland #451 model. Belt drive, no pitman arm, and very reliable design. Several of the "new" mowers use designs patented by New Holland. "Generic parts" are available thru a number of aftermarket sources.

The John Deere #350 mower is another good one. They'll typically run a few bucks higher than a comparable New Holland.

Dollar for dollar, the NEw Holland #451 has about the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

I realize it's all "relative" but what would I expect to spend for a good used NH ?

About the lowest I've seen 'em sell recently is aprox. $300. In mint condition, they sell up to $1200. I've got one I'm about to sell with new guards, sections, belt, skid plate, and swath board. I'm about to paint it too. (Also new decals) It will most likely sell for something like $900. (Manuals included)

I'll start looking around.
In the Spring we usually have some farm auctions nearby, as I live in a rural area. Usually at an auction around here, I'll spend the whole day waiting for an item and it goes for about twice what I'd pay any how.... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
