What is that red bar sticking up in the air?

Jim,

It is a "backboard" to use along with the extension platform I designed. See Photo. The extension adds about 18 inches to the front of the slip scoop floor. It is for carrying large objects that won't fit in the standard scoop. I use it to carry garbage cans, boxes, tools, trimmers, walk-behind mower, lumber, limbs, etc. You can see in the photo that the plate is held in place by a single pin on each side that allows it to pivot upward if the scoop is tilted down. There is a bar across the bottom that rests against the front edge of the scoop to serve as a mechanical stop.

The backboard is easily removed, but I just leave it in place all of the time since it doesn't get in the way. When scooping and moving mulch, I tie a wire mesh screen across the arms. This allows me to get a much larger load of the light loose material.

Jack:

I was looking at some early Steiner pictures that you sent me several years ago when we were exchanging pics, my Ventrac and Your Steiner. I must say that your yard has developed quite nicely over the past four years.

Nice work!

Some larger PTs do have a weight transfer system as indicated in their website information.

My 1845 has a hydraulic draft control system that picks up the mower so that a lot of the weight is on the tractor. It greatly enhances traction. I do all my mowing with draft control on, not only because it enhances traction, but also because the mower is so heavy I am afraid it will damage its wheels and wheel mounts if I let it float.
As I recall, someone inquired about putting such a system on one of the smaller mowers, and that may be what the price quoted was. It is a hydraulic system that could be plumbed in.

Do you have any idea of how it "senses" the load?

Sure don't. If you leave it on when you try to pick up with the bucket (or reverse the wires with the seat tilt - but that's another story.) the load lifts but sags back down.
Sedgewood, you there?

A very little bit!! Greasing the 5 fittings on the PT-425 takes less than 5 minutes!!!!

It seems that the Ventrac is primarily a mower that can also do some FEL work, while the Power Trac primarily does FEL work but can also mow!! Each guy has to decide for himself what is most important to him!!

I have a Power King tractor that I now use just for mowing, and 160 hours since 2/4 on my PT-425 doing everything else!! I would not part with either one!!
