mowing with a Deere Model M - what to use?

Your H has a bit of a hp advantage on the JD M. The Farmall equivalent of the JD M would be a model C. They are all fairly close however and would all be considered "2-plow" tractors. The H has just about perfect hp for the 5 ft cutter and I have used that combo several times and it really worked great (a nieghbor had one). I do think that JD M will also do fine on a 5-footer.

Your Allis has just 15 HP at the PTO or the engine?

I believe the tractor was 19 hp at the belt. As to the pto I would say the same. As to the mower it's an old bush hog unit. I have it at the farm and I'm not there to check on the model. I have two of these tractors and it pulls better with the later (48) tractor. It does ok with the eariler (42) and mower but needs more from the engine. I'm mowing sweet corn stalks, golden rod and much more and it just dosn't stop the tractor.

i'm using a 3 point mower with my M, the one i got is a 5foot, i have used a 6foot with it, just takes a lot of weight up front to keep the front wheels on the ground, they sell 3 and 4 foot mowers that will work just fine, just look for a light weight mower if you have a 3 point on your M, i found if i can pick up one end of the mower, then the M can handle it, with out adding weight to the front.

Worksaver makes a three point conversion kit for the John Deere H. Their website has the manual in pdf format which shows installation and operation. This will expand your options into the possibility of buying an used three point sickle bar mower for your JD H.

I have a 1949 Model M and I pull a 5' rotary mower behind it with no problem and I have some good sized hills to go up too. I don't cut 5 ft tall grass but I have cut 3 ft tall grass and cut sapplings and some other stuff that I probably shouldnt and it still works fine. I wouldn't be afraid to try it. King Kutter makes some pull behinds in various widths.
