Mine came yesterday. This thread has sold two Mr. Cool 18k BTU units. My line set cover and wall mount are all I need to get started. They should be here this weekend from Amazon. I also still need to get a 3 1/2" hole saw bit.

can you provide links of what you bought? you need a 3 1/2? thats what the directions say?

Home Depot has alot of information about the MR Cool units. Home Depot show's a "universal" cover kit, 3 inch x 7.5 foot for $36.66 that looks like it would do a good job covering the pipes.

Sorry so late in responding. My woodworking shop is 2x6 construction and I insulated it well. The big exception is I had 1 40' wall that was not insulated and only had 7/16 osb with tyvek on the outside all summer and it stayed cool without excessive running. I was frustrated trying to figure out the right size for my shop. I used several calculators and got several different answers. The common size recommendation was 18,000 btu and I decided to go 24,000 btu. After I ordered my unit and was waiting on it I was reading the Mr. Cool site and used a tool on their site that recommended 36,000btu and I was worried, but it worked out for the best. I also put in a ceiling fan to move air but don't use it very often.

My brother just installed a Mr. Cool 18K BTU unit in his walk out basement. The thing is absolutely silent compared to a window AC unit. The connector line between the inside and outside unit is 25' long. You cannot shorten it, so you have to have some place to coil it / hide it. Its a heat pump so it heats and cools. It was 90 out yesterday, and the air was very cold. I am impressed and considering getting some for my house to replace the 4 window AC units we have. Heat from them is a bonus. For heat, they use 1450 watts an hour and provide 15,000 BTU's of heat. That is 3X the BTU output of a standard 1500 watt electric space heater. He said it was relatively easy to install. Getting the 220V power to the outside unit was the hardest part of the job.

Boylerman CT - I made that decision years ago and went with 3 units (12,000 BTU) in different areas of the house. I use them on an as needed basis according to where comfort is practical. Best decision I ever made. Like you said less noise and no need to insert and remove based on season. The plus is no need to store them. My sisters followed my example and had them installed in their homes. The oldest sister has central A/C in her home but still had one installed in an area of her house that she had remodeled. None of us regrets our choice to install mini-splits.

Paguy, is one of these 12K units over kill for a bedroom? I currently cool half my house with a 12K window AC unit and each of the 3 bedrooms has a 6K window unit. I can keep the house at 70 even if it is 100 out. So putting 4 12K mini splits would double my cooling capacity which is way too much. I have a typical ranch with family room at one end, dining room and kitchen in middle and 3 bedrooms down a hallway at the far end. My challenge is how to cool the bedrooms since I think one 12K unit could cool all three bedrooms. Wish they had 6K minis.

BoylermanCT - I would think 12K unit would be overkill. My three units can cool my whole house on extremely hot days (90 degrees /humid or higher). I actually run mine individually most of the time. My bedrooms have ceiling fans and draw the cool air into them. I run my units at 74 degrees and medium fan speed. That is comfortable for me. My sisters believe a thermostat reading of 72 degrees and automatic fan speed is their choice. Unit locations - parlor, hallway and family room.
