I saw one of those loss leader ads on tv this am for a ford f150. They were claiming $15 grand off. I paused it and looked at the teensy fine print at the bottom of the screen and it said the deal was for 1 only and gave the stock # of that 1 and it had a MSRP of $52xxx. So, some sales person's kid will get an off color, slow to move off the lot, F150 for about $37xxx dollars. What a crock those loss leader ads. I think they had the current military discount as part of the $15 grand off.

Yep they're the worst. I've purposely walked in and tried to get the deal advertised (even though I knew I wouldn't) just so I could call them out on it when they gave me some crazy price with nowhere near the deductions. I just tell them "look, I want 15k off like I saw advertised or peace out". They'll come back with the whole fine print thing but if you squeal loud enough they will chase you out the door and eventually offer you 12-13 off so you'll shut up. Then you have to watch them in the finance office when they try to get it all back by adding bogus fees.

Did you get the 03 F-150?

Not yet... kind of on the fence... they were holding off pending the arrival of the new F150 which they now have.

It is a good low mileage truck with no frame damage... the body has sheet metal damage in several areas... mostly from the right front fender just ahead of the door all the way back past the wheel well from a pipe deadman and the other side of the bed has a big dent...

I figure to buy a new Ford pickup every 20 to 30 years whether I need to or not. Currently on a 1999 F250 rendition.

Man that never happens here. When you walk in with an ad from the local newspaper, the immediately start shaking in their boots, and ask to see it. Of course, I go to a different dealer and the dealer that had the ad in the paper. And so far, they have never failed to match it. If they don't have that exact vehicle on the lot, they will go and get it from another dealer. And, if your needs are so specific that you have to factory order, they will still give you the price.

Maybe there are regional differences in how the Ford dealers operate?

Very few F150 truck ads in the papers here at all and the few almost always state a dollar amount off or savings...

In the old days there were loss leaders every week...

One thing is certain... the F150 is a brisk seller in Northern CA and the factory can not provide firm delivery date for Factory Orders...

Might be a change of plans...

F150 are selling so well in the SF Bay Area that Dealers are not negotiating much... why should they as the last 3 wwe looked at sold...

So my brother took a look at a 2016 F250 Diesel that is loaded and the Dealer was very interested in talking and has called him twice to see what it would take to make the deal... totally different compared to the loaded F150 King Ranch he wants...

I don't know anything about 2016 F250 Diesels... except they are more money and demand is not as strong as it once was here in the SF Bay Area...

With rare exception... I prefer my vehicles stock or nearly so.

The reason is the money put into mods often compromises the value/performance not to mention the cost of doing the mod.

One of the neighbor girls bought a brand new F150 4wd truck when she was 18 with her dad's co-signature... she made all the payments and paid for a lot of mods... lift kit, exhaust, wheels, tires, etc... the was in 2000... 3 years later she decided she no longer wanted a truck and then learned the hard truth all the mods she had made ended up costing her...

The Dealer explained most of the kids that want these simply don't have the money to buy them used and many lenders will not lend.

When I looked for a Yukon for my wife last year, any mods listed or visible (ie: lift kit, oversize tires, aftermarket exhaust, chip/tune, etc) meant that I stopped looking at that vehicle.
No way to tell how good of a job they did or if they did any damage and I didn't want to find out the hard way that they did a bad job.

Another concern: if there is any remaining factory warranty on the used vehicle, the "mods" might provide a reason/excuse to dishonor the warranty.

Update... Original Dealer said factory order could take 10+ weeks

Another Dealer said 8 weeks... not sure why there would be a difference.

So here is a question...

The Dealer with the short lead time said the F150 simply is not as robust for towing loads over 7k and would strongly discourage it.. said a F250 Diesel is designed for heavy tow loads and a 10k dump trailer is pushing a F150...

Just happens they have several Diesels in stock... which is what we were thinking of prior to the great reviews here on TBN of the F150...

Bottom line is trouble free owning for at least 10 to 15 years... like I have had with my old Silverado Trucks...

If you are towing 7k regularly, I would go with an F250. If you tow it once a week or so, F150 should be fine.
If you tow 10k more than once every few months, I say go with an F250.

That's my opinion. I tow a fifth wheel around 9k-9.5k (loaded) and wouldn't want to tow that with an F150 regularly. Maybe 30 miles each way once a month or so, but long trips or regular towing, give me the F250 any day. My previous travel trailer was 5500 lbs (loaded) and I towed it with an '05 F150 just fine.
