Update... Original Dealer said factory order could take 10+ weeks

Another Dealer said 8 weeks... not sure why there would be a difference.

So here is a question...

The Dealer with the short lead time said the F150 simply is not as robust for towing loads over 7k and would strongly discourage it.. said a F250 Diesel is designed for heavy tow loads and a 10k dump trailer is pushing a F150...

Just happens they have several Diesels in stock... which is what we were thinking of prior to the great reviews here on TBN of the F150...

Bottom line is trouble free owning for at least 10 to 15 years... like I have had with my old Silverado Trucks...

I love how the dealers all try to push the diesels. If you listen long enough, they will have you thinking you need a 1 ton diesel dually to tow an 8N on a 16' trailer...

Good luck in your search. In my area, F150's and F250's are both prevalent on most lots. Gas 3/4 and 1 tons are becoming very rare. Not everyone is pulling 30k up a 7% grade all the time.

Yeah, I should have added that you likely don't need a diesel for 10k, especially if it is an occasional 10k. The 6.2L gasser in the Super Duty is reportedly a very good towing engine, as long as you don't mind letting it sing to do its job.

It looks like a 20% premium for F250 Diesel or 10k...

The Diesels just are not selling as well in the Bay Area as they had been... I think reliability comes into play.

My neighbor that tows several times a week a 12k high cube tag trailer up and down Highway 5 is back to gas...

He had a 99 Excursion Diesel that was trouble free... traded it with high miles for a F250 Diesel and had problems... two years later bought a GMC 2500 Diesel and had trouble and traded it...

For the last 3 years he does all his towing with a gas 3/4 Yukon and said he is done trading...

I think the biggest load going distance and mountains would be 7k

The heavy loads are close to home and mostly country roads...

If that were the case for me, I would go gasser. And I currently own a diesel F250...

Appreciate the reply... it will be interesting what we (He) finally ends up with...

There was a time when all trucks worked... now they have to be grocery getters with room for the family... at least looking at Dealer inventory... almost zero when it comes to standard cab.

[QUOTE=" It still puzzles me why trucks made in Mexico (for penny's on the dollar in labor cost), cost the same as those made in US or Canada.[/QUOTE]
I'm with you on this but the reason is most guys don't give a care where there truck is made as long as they (think) they are getting a deal. In fact I'll bet most have no idea where there's was assembled or the domestic parts content. (Even though it's labeled right on most stickers) If they did you wouldn't see so many driving new 3/4 ton and up dodges around. I believe all the dodge 3/4 ton and up are made in Mexico and a LOT of the 1/2 tons. And have been for some time. To be fair Dodge isn't the only one building in Mexico either But at least for now we have a few vanishing domestic options. Plus hey who cares if it's assembled here we probably have to many jobs here anyway and the corporate executives got to get those bonuses right?

So far every truck I have bought/owned is USA made... the newest truck in the Fleet is a 96 F150...

Picking up a 2016 will be a 20 year jump...

I see decent deals on used trucks coming from the rental fleets. My 2012 Ram 1500 listed a rental co. as the previous owner. Carvana seems to specialize in such vehicles. It may be a challenge to find high towing capacity models. Here are the search results for F150 4x4.

Nice!!! Looks like you are getting your money's worth. I would like to think that the new f150 will give similar or better performance and is still USA made.

Not too many '96 -anythings- around here that are not well perforated by road salt corrosion.

Here it is common to see advertisements like "rust-free California car".

If I was occasionally towing 10,000 lbs I would want the F250, but it would not need to be diesel.

If I was regularly towing 14,000 lbs I would want the diesel.
