murdered coons

In this area of Mass- Ct state lines all are (required) to call the bd of health about coons.. Most here, are rabid and they tell people to stay away from the coons.. When the Bd of health shows up and takes the coons, 9 out of 10 the answer comes back as rabid.. Is this possibly happening near your property?

This is weird....my wife has been finding dead raccoons by our horse pasture about once every couple weeks.

Are they all dieing right in about the same place? If they are then I would think just above everything you could imagine would be thrown out the window as to what was happening other than someone throwing them there. Many years ago the Raccoons got very thick in a lake area and the people were getting worried about them. My dad was one of them as they would come out during the day and even if kids were around it did not bother them. The city, the Game Warden and some other initials came out with live traps to catch them. What did they do with them when caught, they drowned them, well the lake was right there. So with time my dad just did the dirty deed. If being placed at the same spot, you got matted fur, is someone killling them via a live trap and then disposing them on your property?

It has been 5 coons total now over about a 3 month period, all within 200 feet of each other. I inspected the coons yesterday (wonderful smelling experience) and noticed one coon looked like it had been attacked, fur missing, scratches and a large puncture wound on the back of its neck. The other did not look near as rough, just slightly dishevled. The only thing i could tell from the scene was it looked like they were fighting each other and both suffered life ending injuries...as of now this would be my only guess. I do not think anyone is hunting our place, but I did talk to my buddy who owns 300 acres behind us and he told me a while ago some of the locals were hunting on the back of his place, which puts them a mile or so away from my place. It is way too quiet on my place at night for someone to be hunting, the dogs would definitely let me know. I will keep everyone posted.

My "short list" would include distemper, poision, rabies and animal attack in that order. I would suggest treating them as if rabies was involved though and take every precaution to prevent exposure to you and your wife and boost the vaccinations for your dogs. A necropsy and testing would probably help if you really want to find the cause.

Probably a male racoon who off'd the Mrs for selling his CUT, then he died of depression!
