Moss, you are much more trusting of big brother than me. I say they have done several things in this regard that they don't advertise.
They have done some good, like stocking deer back in the 40's and 50's,,like stocking turkey in the 70's,,like dropping rabies vaccines,,,but,do you remember if they asked first?,no,they didn't,they assume they own the animals and they can do with them as they want,I say they can't cause they don't have a zoo,,,but they don't even bother to ask,,its just the way they are,,they are more of a secrete society than the cia,in my opinion.
I had a little girl game warden one time accuse my dog of chasing deer on our property, said she just might have to shoot that dog,[he was chasing deer,we lived in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a meadow and the deer were so thick you couldn't hardly drive at night],he would chase them out of his yard basicly, just like my rabbit dog does today, and stop,,he was tied up every night and etc. I told her she wasn't going to be shooting my dog,,,and if she didn't like my dog chasing her deer than she needed to keep her deer outa my yard,,she left shortly never to return. thats how they think. The only good thing about the dnr is they ain't many of them,if they was as many of them as cops,,I would have been in jail long ago..thingy

The DNR folks around here are very good. They help the private sector with forestry and wildlife management projects, stock fish and wildlife and manage the populations, protect the wildlife on my property from poaching, and support hunter's rights. They also come out to any reported livestock maulings and investigate to see what did the damage. Mostly, it is domestic dogs left out by their owners. Once in a while it is coyotes, and the DNR folks up in Michigan confirmed that a cougar mauled a horse last year, the first confirmed report of that in this area in over a century.

The only DNR rumor I would find plausable is the one that goes like this:

The Michigan and Indiana DNRs don't want to confirm the presence of cougars in their states because it would be one more species they would have to manage and they are short staffed and short funded.

Now that one, I believe! ;)

We Are don't pay your property taxes and the eviction notice comes. Plus the government tells you what you can and can not do with there property.

You might be on to something here. Raccoons don't pay tax. This may be a warning to all the creatures of the forest that the free ride is over.

I agree. Those little masks that they wear all the time can't help their cause, either.

I would bet disease like Distemper... Whenever I see a fox, raccoon, or coyote during the daytime, I assume they are sick and take no chances.

Nah. My family grew up with the family of of the state biologist in charge of the turkey re-introduction program in Northern Indiana. He taught me to swim and was a lifeguard with me and my sisters. Lifeguards are a pretty tight knit group, as we rely on each other to save our lives when making rescues. I don't think a guy like that would lie about anything. And I'm pretty cordial with the local conservation officer and the state forester. The C.O. keeps an eye on my poperty and the state forester has helped us with tree planting programs on our property. For that matter, he's currently helping us get our land into the classified wildlife habitat/classified forest program. Sorry you don't ahve folks you can trust in your area. We are fortunate here.
