I just caught the strangest fly on a sticky strip! It's a normal size for a housefly, and everything from the abdomen forwards looks normal but it has a pure white abdomen with three rectangular brassy colored bars crossways on the top of the abdomen. The bars are very well defined too, sharp 90 degree corners. I wish I had a camera to take a pic, cause it is definitely the weirdest fly I have ever seen!

I know exactly what you have Mace....Your hint should have been the Bars...You have a very rare Bar Fly You could do a service by returning him to the Bar nearest where you found him....might be a reward !

Jeff, I looked up Stable lies and although they are a bit similar in that both have markings on their abdomen, it isn't what you would call a match. This fly is about half again as large as a Stable Fly and the coloration isn't anything close either. I think it's just a one off mutation.

Brin, not a Bar Fly (drosophila melanogaster)! The fly I caught is a good 4 times larger than drosophila melanogaster.

Google has a feature that can use an image and find references to it. Just upload the image and google looks for it and references.

It's going to be very difficult to identify this insect without a photo. I use this website to identify insects. If you submit a photo you will have an ID in a few minutes.
You can look through these photos and see if you can find a match but it's like looking through haystack for a needle.
Not a lot going on in Saskatoon today eh Mace?

No snow here but we have had frost!

Robert~ That's the cat's a**...errr...meow! I started to go through the pics, then wondered just how many pages there were. Turns out there are 2182 pages! Just for the heck of it, I went to the very last page and they had one that was close and it turned out to be a fungus infested fly! I'm quite sure now that was what it was, but in the early stages where the fungus hadn't had time to really grow and get all fuzzy looking. Swear to god it looked just like the fly's abdomen itself was white! Here's a couple of the site's pics...
