I'm gonna quit borrowing the neighbors LX-4 to mow my pastures.... (but don't tell him that -- right away, at least!).

So, I stopped in at the local Kubota dealer (those new cab Grand L40's are somethin') and he quoted me $1,775 for a 60" Landpride that looked to be heavier than the LX models; I'm thinkin' it would compare to a MX-5 and not the LX.

I thought that was a pretty good price! Dropped in to the JD dealer and asked him about the MX-5 and the MX-6. He quoted me the web-site configurator prices, more or less, I think -- $2,100 and $2,600.

I'd like to believe that if I was ready to plunk down the money, the JD salesman would start to come down on those prices.

My question is -- what's reasonable? I don't expect to pay MSRP and also don't want to armwrestle for that last dime --- but, I want to feel like I got a fair deal.

By the way, the Landpride came with front and rear chains and a slip-clutch.

Thanks for any feedback.

All I can tell you, AKfish, is I'm really happy with my Land Pride cutter. It's just a standard duty unit, but it doesn't get babied at all.
FYI, I paid just over a grand about 4 years ago. Steel prices have risen and fuel surcharges didn't apply then. Also, mine has a shear pin and heavy rubber shields rather then chains.

ADDED:
Just looked at your pics in the owner forum (your 970 and home made thumb). You really could go for a 72" cutter behind that 970.

I have an MX-6 that I paid $2100 for. I have used BrushHog and Land Pride shredders in these same pastures and the MX-6 whips them hands down. As a disclaimer, I do not know what model or "duty" those shredders were b/c they were rentals.

I will say that the first time I mowed w/ my MX-6, I looked back and said "Wow, that's what a mowed pasture is supposed to look like." Again, to be fair, any new shredder with new blades might have impressed me just as much.

I hit some 2" to 4" brush last weekend with my MX-6 with no problem.

I am not a Deere salesman, although I sure am sounding like it right now.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Roy, I'm leanin' towards the 72", but those medium duty hummers are "heavy". Most of what I do currently, is level and easy cutting.
But, I'm thinking about taking on some outside work and on hills, slopes, etc. a 5' might be easier (less pucker factor) to handle.

And CWP, I'm partial to the MX-6 but don't want to "donate" more to the JD dealer than I have to...

Bought a Landpride scarifier from the Kubota dealer a month or so back and he as nearly $300 less than the JD guy for the same attachment.

So, the JD guys are a harder bunch to deal with and I appreciate feedback from others with their views on prices, etc.

I just ordered the MX5 and was quoted a little over $1,800, the exact price is in the office and I'm in the recliner. I did not really look around much this go around but this is solid and sounded about the same range I was quoted a few months back for others when I did shop some. I'm not sure if this is a good price and thought about calling around but was to tired.

I thought about the MX6 but did not want to spend any more money and since I want it to clear heavy wooded area I thought it might be easier with the smaller size.

I have an MX5 on order and I had to really work to get it down to 1875.oo out the door.

Slightly off topic, but good luck with your Landpride scarifier. I bought one about 3 months ago and it didn't take long before both a draft link pin and the 3/4" thick steel plate that the pin bolts into were bent from hitting a buried rock - which, of course, is absolutely within the intended use of the tool as stated in the owner's manual. The dealer talked with the Landpride rep and his response was that they didn't want to fix it and if they did they would weaken it in the process, so tough luck. That's the last piece of Landpride I ever expect to buy. IMHO, get the MX, or get a Woods.

I called yesterday to price a Bush Hog model 12. It was a "medium duty" cutter. Dealer said it had been discontinued and priced me a "heavy duty" 5' for $2836. It is to big for my tractor and way overpriced. I have not priced a mx5 at my dealer because it is also to big. I wanted more than a light duty but may have to settle. JC

You'll want a standard duty cutter...60" maybe, depending on what you're cutting.
Try Land Pride or Befco...
I know (through personal experience the last three years) the the Land Pride standard duty is a robust unit. The weight is 620 lbs ± 20 lbs which your 2520 should handle with front weights or a loader.

Check your deere dealers and have them search for an LX5. They are no longer made, and my dealer is letting them go for 800.00 plus tax if it applies. If those are not to light duty, it might be a good option.:)

I bought the Woods Heritage HSS60 for $1120.00. I've cut 12 acres with it with no problems so far & like it the way it performs. It has the slip clutch & adjusts from 1-9 inches of cutting depth. I beleive it is a standard duty.

That would be an absolute steal for an LX cutter. They are standard or light duty, but are very well made. I have an LX6 and am very happy with it; the only thing I've seen that I like equally well is the Woods BB72.

The same dealer had an LX6 also.... The rear rim on the LX5 was faded, so I would suspect it has been outside for some time..... The LX6 had a better rear tire and it looked in better shape... Both new, but the sun kills them.

Not sure where you are but I'm guessing somewhere in the sunbelt. My LX6 lives outside and paint still looks new. They seem to have a high quality paintjob, and while they were being made JD advertised that they were the only cutter available with an automative type paint job (not sure if this is still true today).

I am in Bay City...LOL... I can't be over 200 miles from you, pendeing where you are. The paint on these machines was great. The LX5 had either a plastic rear rim, or some bad paint, because it was faded bad... Just the rear rim, everything else looked new. except for rust where the paint was scuffed....

Hmm... I'm pretty sure that my dealer has at least 1 and maybe more LX's on the lot. Have to drop in and look around. He might be easier to deal with on a discontinued attachment.

Whoa... Z! You bent that 3/4 inch mounting plate?? Man, that must have been a pretty good jolt!

I'd think that the ripper shank would fail before that would happen ---

Maybe you could weld a triangle shape gusset to reinforce (after straightening) the plate?

You'd like to believe that the dealer or LandPride would at least offer to put the unit back into operation with the disclaimer that it might/might not be as strong but we'll work with you to get you going again.

Yeah, that plate is bent. The biggest rock I've hit was about 12" across and the SF brought it up to the surface. Again, this is within the designed use of the SF. They did halfheartedly offer to straighten it but said it would be greatly weakened in the process. To me that's ridiculous. They should acknowledge that either the design or construction is defective relative to the stated operating parameters (50hp max) and should have replaced it with a brand new one or offered me a refund. The thing is still useable but is bent and IMHO that is inappropriate for brand new equipment from a supposedly top line brand. I intend to use it as long as I can, and if it bends further ask my uncle in law (a professional welder) to try and fix and strengthen it.

Not many companies make scarifiers but the two others I've seen - Unverferth (Town & Country) and A&B Eagle Line - both have clevis hitches that are presumably much stronger. I wish I had bought the Unverferth instead, especially given that it was $50 less.

Hmm.. don't know anything about the Unverferth. Went out and looked at the scarifier attachment. Noticed that there's a triangle gusset welded on only one side of the 3/4" plate.

It'd be a much better design if it was "balanced" on both sides of the plate with a gusset. But, that sure is a hefty chunk of steel as it is...

Haven't taken the jump on a new cutter, yet. The CEO is telling me I should invest in a flat-bed equipment trailer, instead.

We'll see.

There is a small gusset and the 3/4" plate looks really beefy, but I will be happy to trade you my bent one if you want it! If Landpride had only rated the thing up to 35-40hp I would feel it was in the right ballpark, but it bent with my 50hp that it was rated for.

I think most Landpride implements are good, but they are pricey and this experience hasn't impressed me. There are so many brands to choose from, why take a risk?
