Tractor
Kubota Bx24, 2007
Hi everyone. Need some help from u guys. Today I have an BX24 which Im very happy with. But sometimes it too small. For example I need to get a "trailer" with a hydralic crane to do some work in the woods, trees catch by storms etc. I find that the BX24 dont have the ground clearance aswell to small tires to preform in the woods well. And I need a stronger loader. The BX24 is fantastic for what its designed for ,dont get my wrong. And I have a 3 acre field which I need to plow. As Im going to use the new tractor with loader I want it to be easy to operate, gearbox wise (forward/backward/forward) I love the HST on my BX (execpt the brutal stoppings..) So which of the two models would do the work best?
I looking to spend maybe around 20-25000 and try to find a nice used example with not to many hours on.
Kubota M5140 with frontloader could be an alternative aswell
Thanks,
/Sam

i own a m5040 2007 model which i can't speak too highly of!!! and thats coming from a person who ran a massey 65 for 50+ years. don't get me wrong you can not compare these two tractors except in quality, dependability and toughness!!!! that said you should stay away from a hydro style tractor if you are planning on doing any serious continuous working of tractor you need a clutch and gear drive for strength power and longevity since you are looking at the m5140 compare it with the previous model it's replacing my m5040 engine is not the same smaller cu in's and is turbo'd that has a lot to do with pulling power and torque rise to recover from a load being applied to tractor the mx 5100 seems to be a better choice it has a previous record is no frills not that much to go wrong the m5140 is a brand new tractor model not the same as a m5040 m5140 has yet to be proven

I don't know about the MX but the GL40 HST + transmission has a knob you can turn that will make the HST response really fast to really slow so you don't have to worry about abrupt starts or stops.

Personally I wouldn't go with a gear tractor. Having HST driving through tight woods is great. If you need to jockey around a tree and you need to go forwards, backwards, then forwards again, well I wouldn't want a clutch. A shuttle shift would work fine though.

I think either tractor will work fine. The GL will give you more models to choose from. Unless you really need the extra lifting capacity of the 854 loader I would look for the 3940. I could be wrong but it seams like people skip over it to get the larger loader so there are some good deals around on low hour used ones.

I think it really comes down to do you like and want the extra features of the GL?

There are so many tractors in between the BX and the small M-series to choose from that will plow 3 acres with little effort that you might even be able to buy more tools if you size down on the M-series to a L or large B series.

I have the MX5100. I wanted a gear tractor. basically for the price and the fact that it is one less thing to break. I don't think you will go wrong with either tractor.

I have 8+ acres and just traded a L2950, gear tractor, w/FEL for a L3400, gear tractor, w/FEL and back hoe. The size on these has been great for getting around my woods, etc.

I also had a BX 1500 w/MMM we just traded for a BX 1860 w/MMM, it is my wife's for mainly cutting grass, light hauling with a trailer, spraying fence lines , etc.

The L series has been very good to me.
