MX5100 vs Grand

A couple of questions for those that have gone from a Lxx40 to a MX. I'm wanting/needing to go to a larger brushcutter. How much do you miss the features of the Grand when going to a MX5100 HST? Also, if you use the rule of 5hp/ft., why do folks seem to run 6' and 7' cutters behind the MX? Why not go with an 8 footer? I have a L3240HST and a 5' LP. Looking to go to a MX5100HST with a larger cutter.

i have the MX5100 HST 4x4 w/LA844 quick tach loader.an i love it,it has lots of power.i use it to lift big 5 by 6 round bales an to pull a 4 bale hay hauler with a bale on the loader.you can pull an 8 or 10 pull type shredder with it with ease.but i would not put an 8ft 3pt shredder on it.it is a plain tractor an doesnt have the fancy features of the grand.

8 ft cutters just seem to be an awkward size and they aren't too common. One really big blade or a 2 blade configuration, which drives up the cost. One huge deck that usually doesn't fold and is hard to maneuver and store. Big deck is also heavy, hard to handle, doesn't like uneven terrain, etc., etc. Double the cost of a 6 ft. for only a 1/3 larger cutting width. Seems more typical for those who have more mowing than a 6 footer can handle to move up to a bigger tractor and a 10 ft or larger wing mower setup, typically a pull-type that folds for transport and storage.

That said, there are 8 footers available and the MX5100 should handle one, depending on your terrain and what you need to mow.

Maybe some of the folks with larger M's have additional comments.

Builder uses a MX8 with off set capabilities on his M7040 for commercial mowing.

We have a 6' RCR2672 on our L5030 and pull type Woods DS1260 on our M8540 which works well for us.

As mentioned a 8' 3-point is not something I would want on a MX5100.

For pastures and the like we often put the 7' twin spindle Bush Hog on the back of thirty plus horsepower hydro tractors. With the twin tail wheels and the closeness to the tractor it makes a good combination.

If you like the features of the GL why not get a larger GL, like the 5240 or get more power with the 5740?

I have started leaning that way (larger GL). The problem is I'm having trouble finding one in the area. The largest I've seen is a 3940. Going to try looking a little further away this weekend.
