Scary stuff, been there, done that on a truck diesel.
In my case, it was the injection pump, so disconnecting the fuel line did the trick.
If your going to block the air intake, use a block of wood, as stated earlier, it will suck just about anything in the intake.
Once it starts on feeding from the oil however, blocking the air intake is the only way,
if you can't do that for some reason, she'll run until there's no more oil and blow the engine.

I can tell you this, now that this has happened to you, you'll have this in the back of your mind for quite some time. Also, depending on how long the engine has been revving high, it could be dangerous to start playing under the hood.
